How to choose a dog groomer in Torquay and Torbay

Dog grooming is not a regulated trade in the UK, so there's no licence or inspection to check before booking. This directory does the groundwork it can: confirming a working phone number, cross-checking facts across more than one source where possible, and being plain about what it couldn't confirm. Here's what that turned up across the 25 groomers listed for Torquay, Paignton, Brixham, Teignmouth & Dawlish, Totnes, Kingsbridge & Salcombe and Dartmouth.

How well documented each business is

Fourteen of the 25 are high confidence, meaning the details come from the business's own working website, often backed by a second source: Barking Bay Beauties, Scruffs Torbay, Muddy Paws Dog Grooming and Retail, GlamWags Dog Grooming, A1 Dog Grooming, The Flufftastic Groomer, Barking Lovely, Dog Designs of Dawlish, Fetchers Club, Dinkum Dogs of Dawlish, Debs Groom & Zoom, Scruffy Pups Dog Grooming, Grooming Gosh and Toodles Dog Grooming Salon & Boutique. The other eleven are medium confidence, usually meaning the phone number came from a directory listing or a Google Places check rather than the business's own site, and the published detail beyond the address is often limited to a line or two: Shaggy Dogz, Brush Puppies, The Lady Dog Groomer, Kistor Canine Beauticians, La Bella Bark Dog Grooming, Sticky Paws, Shiv's Top Dogs, Pupsters, The Dashing Dog Devon, Hairy Dog Grooming Salon and Vanity Tails Dog Grooming. For any of these eleven, it's worth confirming services, hours and pricing by phone before turning up, since a directory listing is often all that's behind them.

Newton Abbot: no groomer listed here

Newton Abbot is plainly the thin spot in this edition: no dog groomer based in the town could be published at all. Three candidates turned up in research, Southernhay Dog Grooming, Friendly Neighbourhood Dog Groomer and Paws for Thought Mobile Dog Grooming, but all three exist only as a Facebook page with no address or phone number that could be independently confirmed, so none met the bar for publication. GlamWags Dog Grooming was also briefly linked to a Newton Abbot address on older directory listings, but its own site places it in Torquay instead, so it doesn't fill the gap either. The one published business that names Newton Abbot in its coverage is The Lady Dog Groomer, a mobile service (listed under Torquay) that also visits Newton Abbot, Torbay, Totnes, Paignton, Churston and Galmpton. Anyone in Newton Abbot right now is best either booking that mobile visit or calling a salon in nearby Torquay or Paignton to ask whether they can take a dog from further out.

Six businesses left out for lack of a confirmed phone

Beyond the three Newton Abbot leads above, three more were excluded for the same reason. Snoopys, in Ellacombe, Torquay, and Hello Pets, in Paignton, each turned up on more than one directory listing with a different partial mobile number every time, none of which could be resolved to a full, confirmable number. In The Dog House, in Kingsbridge, exists only as a Facebook page and reviews on an online listing, with no confirmable address or phone. All six are left out under this directory's rule that publication needs a working, confirmed phone number, not because the businesses themselves are necessarily unreliable.

Also excluded, and why

Pets at Home Groom Room, seen for Newton Abbot at the Greenhill Way Retail Park, was left out as a national chain rather than an independent local groomer. Hairy Beasts Pet Grooming and Tor & Terrier, both in Moretonhampstead, fall in the TQ13 postcode district, just outside the eight areas this edition covers, so neither is counted here. BOOP Dog Grooming also trades as Fido Sassoon in Chudleigh, also TQ13; only its Teignmouth trading name, Sticky Paws, appears in this directory.

Two things worth double-checking

GlamWags Dog Grooming's own site gives 127b Reddenhill Road, Torquay as its current address, but older directory entries still show a superseded Kingskerswell address; the Torquay address is used here as current. The Lady Dog Groomer shares a phone number with an online listing for a "Local Groomer" in Totnes; treated as the same mobile business rather than counted twice.

Qualifications

City & Guilds training comes up most often: GlamWags Dog Grooming (Level 3 diploma), A1 Dog Grooming (all groomers), Grooming Gosh, Dinkum Dogs of Dawlish (Level 3), Pupsters (Level 3) and, per their directory listings, Brush Puppies and Hairy Dog Grooming Salon. Debbie at Scruffs Torbay qualified with distinction at NVQ Level 3, trained further under Colin Taylor and Sarah Hussein of Harrods Pet Spa, and the salon holds membership of the Pet Industry Federation and the British Dog Groomers Association. Alex at Sticky Paws holds Level 3, canine first aid and ultrasonic teeth cleaning certification and specialises in nervous and rescue dogs; BellaClare at Barking Lovely completed a Platinum Dog Grooming Course at South Warwickshire Dog Grooming School in 2018. Several businesses here, mostly the medium-confidence ones, publish no training details at all, so ask if it matters to you.

Mobile groomers

Three of the 25 come to you rather than the other way round: The Lady Dog Groomer (Newton Abbot, Torquay, Torbay, Totnes, Paignton, Churston and Galmpton), Barking Lovely (based in Dawlish, using a professional pet dryer rather than a cabinet dryer) and The Dashing Dog Devon (based in Stoke Fleming, covering Dartmouth and surrounding villages from a converted van with a warm water hydro bath). None publishes a call-out fee, so confirm it covers your postcode and what that adds to the price before booking.

Reviews

No business in this directory carries a star rating here. A handful appear on general directory-aggregator pages, but none of those has an independently verifiable Google, Trustpilot, Fresha, Booksy or Yelp page behind it, so none is shown; ask to see recent work or a reference instead. Two testimonials turned up in research and are worth knowing about even without a rating attached: A1 Dog Grooming's site cites a stressed Frenchie put at ease, and Scruffy Pups Dog Grooming's cites a long-term-nervous Jack Russell settling after thirteen years of trying other groomers.

Where the coverage sits

Torquay itself has the most listed groomers (seven), followed by Teignmouth & Dawlish (six) and Dartmouth (four), then Paignton, Brixham, Totnes and Kingsbridge & Salcombe (two each). Newton Abbot, as above, currently has none based in the town. If you're in a thinner area, check whether one of the three mobile groomers covers your postcode before travelling to the nearest salon.
