How to choose a dog groomer in Northampton

Dog grooming is unregulated in the UK, so the checking is on you. Northampton's twenty-eight listed groomers range from established salons with formal training academies to home-based one-person operations found through a single directory listing. Read this before you pick one.

Check how well the business is documented

Of the twenty-eight businesses in this directory, eight were confirmed from a first-hand working website plus at least one other independent source (marked high confidence): K9 Clip and Shine, Rolos Dog Grooming Parlour, Happy Hounds Towcester, Posh Paws, Critterz Grooming, The Posh Paw, Posh Pooches and Diamond Dogs Grooming. The remaining twenty are medium confidence, usually meaning the details come from a directory listing such as mypetgroomer.co.uk or a Nextdoor business page rather than the groomer's own working site. None in this edition is low confidence, and none was excluded purely for having no confirmed phone number, though a small number of leads were dropped for exactly that reason during research (see below).

Two flagged duplicate listings

The Wet Wolf Dog Grooming Co, in Greens Norton near Towcester, shares an identical address and phone number with a second listing under the name Ultimuttz Mobile Dog Grooming MK; this looks like the same operator or premises trading under a second brand rather than two separate businesses, so it is listed once here. Separately, PAWS @ The Shires Dog Grooming, at the Heart of the Shires shopping village near Weedon, shares its shopping-village address with a listing found under the name Poodle Paws Dog Grooming; again treated as one business under its fuller-documented name rather than counted twice.

Who was left out, and why

Several national chains were seen during research and deliberately excluded, since this directory covers independent businesses: Pets at Home's in-store Groom Room (seen for both Weston Favell and Daventry branches), Pets & Friends at Weston Favell District Centre, Dial A Dog Wash (a national mobile franchise) and a "Dog & Cat Grooming" counter at Nene Valley Retail Park in NN1, which reads as an in-store operation rather than a confirmed independent. A handful of businesses seen only via Facebook, with no independent confirmation elsewhere, were dropped rather than guessed at: Jackson's Dog Grooming in Wootton, Tatty Tails (also linked to the same Austin Way address as Care 4 Canines, see below), The Adored Dog Spa, Towcester Dog Grooming, The Pawfectionist and Rosie's Grooming Room. Two apparently independent Northampton town-centre groomers, Clock Tower Tails and The Muddy Paw Northampton, came up repeatedly in research but their websites returned an error or didn't resolve, and no independent address could be confirmed for either, so both are left out under the same rule. Four businesses offering training or behaviour work rather than grooming, D C L Dogs, Jackador Dog Training and Behaviour, Balanced Pet Academy and Hounds at Home, were excluded as out of scope.

One flagged address conflict

Care 4 Canines and a business called Tatty Tails Dog Grooming were both found at 9 Austin Way, Daventry, with different phone numbers. Rather than guess whether this is one business, a rebrand, or two home-based groomers sharing a small residential address, only Care 4 Canines, the better-documented of the two, is listed here; if you're calling about Tatty Tails specifically, it's worth double-checking which business you'll actually be booking.

Qualifications

City & Guilds training comes up repeatedly: Critterz Grooming's Lisa (Level 3, plus advanced cat- and rabbit-grooming certificates), The Posh Paw's Jane, Posh Pooches' Cynthia, Diamond Dogs Grooming's Pat, Top Dogs Grooming Spa's Diana, Care 4 Canines' Alison Broome and PAWS @ The Shires all cite it. Posh Pooches' Cynthia also holds membership of the Pet Care Trust and the British Dog Grooming Association. Ask for the qualification by name if it matters to you, and remember that plenty of experienced groomers in this directory, including some with fifteen to thirty years behind the scissors, don't hold a formal certificate at all.

One-to-one and home-based setups

Many of Northampton's groomers work from a home salon rather than a multi-dog shop floor: Diamond Dogs Grooming (a daily dog limit), Groomology Northampton, Bluewolf Dog Grooming (air-conditioned, no crating), Rowan Tree Grooming and several of the smaller village-based businesses around Daventry and Towcester. Critterz Grooming and Posh Pooches both describe themselves as crate-free, one-to-one salons even though they trade from dedicated premises rather than a home. If a calm, single-appointment setting matters for an anxious or reactive dog, K9 Clip and Shine specifically advertises experience with nervous, elderly and aggressive dogs and is worth asking about directly.

Mobile groomers

Only two of the twenty-eight businesses here work from a van rather than a fixed salon: Doggy Style Grooming, covering all breeds across the Northampton area from a Far Cotton base, and Ruff Mutt Mobile Dog Grooming, which covers Northampton, Kettering and Wellingborough from a purpose-built HQ in Kettering and was named Best Pet Grooming Business in Northamptonshire 2024 at England's Business Awards. If you need someone to come to you and neither of these covers your postcode, it's worth asking a salon-based groomer whether they also travel.

Cats and other animals

Where they are

Coverage is heaviest in Towcester (seven businesses, several in surrounding villages such as Blisworth and Silverstone) and Daventry (six, several in villages including Weedon Bec and Little Preston), followed by Kingsthorpe, Duston and Wootton (four each), Weston Favell (two) and Northampton town centre itself, the thinnest area with only one confirmed independent, the mobile-only Ruff Mutt. If you're in the town centre or Weston Favell, a mobile groomer covering your postcode, or the nearest well-documented salon in a neighbouring area, is worth trying first.
