How to choose a dog groomer in Bournemouth

Dog grooming is unregulated in the UK, so the checking is on you. Bournemouth's twenty-one listed groomers range from a salon trading for over 12 years with four City & Guilds qualified staff to businesses confirmed by little more than a phone number. Read this before you pick one.

Check how well the business is documented

Of the twenty-one businesses in this directory, ten were confirmed from a first-hand website plus at least one other source (marked high confidence). Nine are medium confidence, usually meaning the address or phone comes from an independent directory listing rather than the business's own working site — this is the case for Dogz Grooming Spa, Dog and Groom Wimborne, My Dogs Groomer, Cassie's Dog Grooming Spa and Hollywoofs Dog Grooming Studio, whose own sites could not be reached directly during research (DNS failures, an expired certificate, or a hostname mismatch, depending on the business). Two are low confidence: Mutleys Makeover and Hairy Choppin's Mobile Dog Grooming, both confirmed by phone number only, with no verifiable address. Six more businesses found during research were left out of this directory entirely because no phone number could be confirmed: Pretty Paws, Southbourne Dog Groomers, Poole Road Grooming, Sam's Groom Room, Clip N Chip and The Pooch Parlour.

Two flagged address conflicts

Doggie-Styles gives its address as Unit 7 Manor Park, Willis Way, Poole on its own site, but a directory lists a different Poole address for the same phone number and website; the own-site address is used here as the more authoritative source. Dogz Grooming Spa appears under two different Christchurch Road addresses across sources, in Boscombe (BH7 6AA) and Pokesdown (BH7 6AP); the conflict is flagged here rather than guessed at, so ask which premises to visit when you book.

Qualifications

City & Guilds training comes up at two of the highest-confidence businesses: Cherished Pets Dog Grooming Salon, whose team includes four City & Guilds qualified groomers trained in animal welfare and pet first aid, and K9 Hairdooz, whose groomer holds a City & Guilds Level 3 Diploma in Professional Dog Grooming with Distinction and has won regional grooming competition awards. Ask for the qualification by name if it matters to you.

One-to-one and home studios

Several businesses describe a one-to-one approach: Scruffy to Fluffy 96 grooms one dog at a time with calming music and lavender aromatherapy for nervous dogs, Paige's Pooches and StylaDog both run one-to-one appointments, and K9 Hairdooz operates from a home salon in Redhill. For an anxious, elderly or reactive dog, it's worth asking directly how a smaller studio handles a single appointment slot even where this isn't advertised on the website.

Mobile groomers

Four of the twenty-one businesses in this directory work from a van rather than a fixed salon: Clippity Snip and Spa Tails Mobile Dog Grooming & Spa (both covering Poole), Paddypaws Mobile Dog Grooming (West Moors, run by Sue with 30 years' experience), and Hairy Choppin's Mobile Dog Grooming (Bournemouth, low confidence). If you need someone to come to you elsewhere in the area, ask a salon-based groomer whether they also travel.

Cats and small animals

Two of the twenty-one businesses in this directory also groom cats: Cats and Dogs Grooming Bournemouth, which names cat grooming in its own service description, and Doggie-Styles, which lists cat grooming alongside its dog services. If you keep a cat rather than, or as well as, a dog, these are the confirmed options in this directory.

Reviews

No business in this directory has an independently checked, dated star rating shown here. No source fetched during research — Google Maps, Trustpilot, Fresha, Booksy or Yelp — turned up a verifiable rating page for any Bournemouth-area groomer in the time available. One business's award claim (a 'Best Pet Grooming Business Dorset 2023' mention for Cats and Dogs Grooming Bournemouth) could not be confirmed on a fetched page and so is not repeated here. Ask to see recent work or a reference rather than relying on a star count that isn't shown here.

Who else was researched and left out

Beyond the six excluded for lack of a confirmed phone number, research also ruled out businesses that turned out not to offer grooming at all — Kirsty's Paws and Dorset Muscahounds (both dog training/walking only), and Handsome Hounds Ltd, whose own site describes only dog-training courses despite a directory snippet calling it a grooming salon. Pets at Home Groom Room branches at Poole and Christchurch were excluded as a national chain, as with every other town in this network. Two businesses — Little Wooferz and Pristine Pooch — were dropped for lack of any confirmable address, postcode or phone despite an active-looking online presence. Pawfectly Groomed, in Broadstone, is a distinct business from Pawfectly (Ashley Road) despite the similar name; it wasn't independently confirmed in time for this listing and may be worth checking separately.

Where they are, and where coverage is thin

Coverage is heaviest in Poole and Wimborne (five and four businesses respectively), followed by Ferndown (four) and Kinson and Christchurch (three each), with Winton and Boscombe on two each and Southbourne on just one confirmed business, Southbourne Dog Groomers, which is itself excluded here for lack of a confirmed phone. Bournemouth town centre (BH1/BH2) has no business confirmed to trade from the centre itself; the two businesses listed under Bournemouth town centre in this directory, Mutleys Makeover and Hairy Choppin's Mobile Dog Grooming, are both low confidence and placed there for lack of a more specific area, not because either is confirmed to operate from the centre. If you're in the centre, Southbourne or Boscombe, it's worth checking coverage by phone with a nearby groomer rather than assuming one is based on your doorstep.
