How to choose a dog groomer in Weymouth, Dorchester and beyond
Dog grooming is unregulated in the UK, so the checking is on you. This directory covers 48 groomers researched across eight named areas spanning Weymouth and Portland, Dorchester, Bridport and Lyme Regis, Beaminster and Sherborne, Blandford Forum, Sturminster Newton and Gillingham, Wareham and Swanage, and Crewkerne and Chard, a wider span than a single town because the coverage runs from the Dorset coast to the Somerset border. Check how well the business is documented
Of the 44 businesses listed, 23 are confirmed from a first-hand working website plus at least one other source (marked high confidence). The remaining 21 are medium confidence, usually meaning the details come from a Facebook page, an online listing, or a phone number confirmed independently through the business's own Google listing rather than its own working site. None of the 44 published here is low confidence: the four businesses that were only ever a name and a Facebook page with no confirmable phone number are the ones left out rather than published with a caution attached.
A note on phone numbers
A handful of listings that appeared on more than one online directory page showed a different, partially masked mobile number on each fetch, for what was otherwise clearly the same business at the same address, a data-quality issue with how those listings render contact details rather than a sign of anything wrong with the business itself. Where that happened, none of the conflicting partial numbers was published; a number for the specific business, tied to its own address, was confirmed independently through Google's own listing data before this directory went live. Every business shown here carries a phone number checked against its own address, not just lifted from a shared or conflicting listing.
Who was left out, and why
Four businesses were dropped for having no phone number that could be verified from any source: Coastal Canines and The Dorset Dog Groomer, both in the Weymouth and Portland area; Parkwood Paws, near Gillingham; and Sophie's Pawsome Grooming, in Crewkerne. A national chain is excluded on principle: Pets at Home / The Groom Room at a Dorchester retail park. A larger group of otherwise well-documented groomers sit outside the eight named areas this edition covers and aren't listed here, mostly around Poole, Bournemouth, Ferndown, Wimborne and Christchurch to the east, Yeovil and nearby Somerset towns to the north (already covered by a separate Taunton listing), and several Devon postcodes to the west. One listing, trading as "Weymouth Dog Shop", turned out on checking to be a same-named business in Weymouth, Massachusetts, in the United States, and was dropped entirely rather than risk publishing an American address as a Dorset one. A further business, Country Style Dog Grooming in Sherborne, came up only as a name with no confirmable address, phone or distinguishing detail, and wasn't carried into the final list on that basis alone.

Dapper Dogs Grooming Salon in Dorchester notes ten years of grooming experience alongside its qualification, and Canine Couture in Lyme Regis cites over eight years. The most decorated is West Country Dog Grooming in Beaminster, run by Master Groomer Sue Gould, author of The Dog Groomers Manual and holder of the City & Guilds Medal of Excellence for teaching, who also runs her own grooming courses from basic pet grooming through to City & Guilds diploma level. Ask for the qualification by name if it matters to you.
One-to-one and home-based setups
Several businesses describe grooming one dog at a time rather than running a busy multi-dog salon floor: The Fabulous Fur Parlour, Dapper Dogs Grooming Salon (Dorchester), Give The Dog a Comb, The Grooming Parlour and Crescent Dog Groomers all mention a one-to-one format. A larger group work from home rather than a fixed shop premises: Charlotte's Groom Room (a farm near Waytown, Bridport), Short, Bark 'n' Sides (Fifehead Neville), Red Post Dog Grooming (Winterborne Zelston, with evening slots), Barking Barber Dog Groomers (a family farm between Crewkerne, Beaminster and Birdsmoor Gate), Mucky Pups Dog Grooming (South Street, Crewkerne), and Swanage and Purbeck Dog Grooming Services. If a calm, single-appointment setting matters for an anxious dog, these are worth asking about directly.
