How to choose a dog groomer in Tower Hamlets and east London

Who isn't listed here, and why

A handful of businesses turned up in research but aren't published. Dogbliss Dog Grooming Salon, Lead the Walk and King Rory and Friends had no phone number that could be confirmed from any source, so they're held back until one turns up. Short Bark and Beard, a few doors from Dogbliss on the same stretch of Roman Road in Bow and sharing its E3 5QR postcode, rests on a single listing just as Dogbliss does; the two are close enough that this edition treats them as a pair and only publishes either once both have a working phone number, so neither appears yet. Waggly Dogs Ltd is listed at a shared office building in Silvertown, which may be a registered or mailing address rather than a working salon, so it's held back until that's confirmed rather than sent readers to an address that might not be a grooming business at all. A national pet-store chain and several template-style listings with no named groomer or fixed address were also left out, along with one Bow salon whose own site says it has closed.

Qualifications and how people work

Where a qualification is published, it tends to be a Level 2 or 3 vocational grooming qualification: Doug's Dogs in Mile End is led by a Level 3 qualified groomer and holds a five-star animal-activity licence; Hairy Hounds in Hackney's in-house groomer holds a City & Guilds Level 2 and trained in Poland; Puppydog Groom Room in Leyton was opened by a groomer with an ONC Level 3 diploma after eight years in veterinary work; and Latin Groomer in Bow is run by a groomer with a background in show-dog grooming. Groom Dog City's owner chairs the British Dog Groomers Association and has worked as a consultant on a television grooming show. Several salons cap their daily bookings or work one dog at a time for a calmer, one-to-one experience: Hot Dogs Grooming in its container studio, Lila Loves next door to it, and House of Pets & Groomers on Well Street, which starts every appointment with a consultation.

Grooming as part of something bigger

Several of the businesses here aren't grooming-only: Hairy Hounds in Hackney and Doglands Club Grooming Salon are daycare centres with an in-house grooming service, House of Pets & Groomers and Furmily East Village are pet shops with a grooming room attached, and Tongues and Tails is a dog bakery whose grooming is booked through its online shop. That can mean more limited grooming hours than a dedicated salon, so it's worth asking what slots are actually available for grooming rather than daycare or retail.

Cats and other pets

Cat grooming is published at two salons: Groom Dog City in Bethnal Green and Furmily East Village in Stratford, both from £80. If you have a cat rather than, or as well as, a dog, these are the two to ask first.
