How to choose a dog groomer in Stafford

A young woman makes a phone call on a sunny pavement outside a salon while her French Bulldog sits at her feet

Dog grooming is unregulated in the UK, so the checking is on you. This directory bundles four postcode clusters into one Stafford listing: Stafford town centre (ST16-ST18), Eccleshall & Gnosall (ST20-ST21), Uttoxeter (ST14) and Penkridge (ST19). This page previously also covered Tamworth, Lichfield, Rugeley & Burntwood and Burton upon Trent; those areas have since grown enough coverage of their own to move to a dedicated Tamworth, Lichfield and Burton upon Trent listing, so they're no longer part of this page. Of the 26 businesses researched for these four remaining areas, 23 are listed below; the other 3 are left out for the reasons set out here.

Why only 23 of 26

This directory publishes only businesses with a phone number that could be confirmed. Three businesses with a confirmed address still have no phone number that could be verified from any source and are not listed: Grooming by Jan, based in Rocester near Uttoxeter, whose groomer is City & Guilds trained and an approved advanced animal first aider; Groomingtails Dog Spa, a salon behind Waitrose on Trinity Road, Uttoxeter, offering a doggy chauffeuring pick-up service; and Groomin' Gorgeous Penkridge, a home-based salon on Cooke Close. If a further phone lookup runs, any of the three may be added.

A further handful were excluded during research rather than at the phone-confirmation stage: Stone and Barlaston are covered by a neighbouring town's listing rather than this one, as is Cannock; national chain branches are excluded throughout this network; an unnamed listing on Doxey in Stafford was dropped because no trading name could be found for it anywhere, as was a second unnamed listing at The Oaks in Eccleshall; a business called Tailored Tails, initially thought to share an address with a Burton upon Trent salon, was dropped after a direct check found no evidence it actually operates there; Nifty Cuts, a grooming service attached to Sweet Turf Boarding Kennels near Church Eaton, was dropped after its website's security certificate had expired and other sources suggested the kennels had closed; Bees Knees Dog Grooming was dropped because the mobile phone number advertised for it is identical to the one already recorded for Tops N' Tails, suggesting the same operator under two names rather than two separate businesses; and Debonair Dogs in Denstone, near Uttoxeter, was dropped after conflicting signals turned up about whether it has closed, rather than risk listing a business that no longer trades.

How well documented each listing is

Of the 23 published businesses, 6 are high confidence, meaning the details were confirmed from the business's own working website plus at least one independent source: Dogroomin', The Grooming Barn, Dirty Dogs, The Dog Groomer in Penkridge, Quintessential Quarters in Cotes Heath and Highwood Boarding Kennels in Uttoxeter. Most of the rest, 13 in total, are medium confidence, usually meaning the details come from a directory listing, business's Facebook page or independent review site rather than the business's own working site. Four are low confidence, meaning the entry rests on a thin listing with little beyond a name, address and phone number: Tops N' Tails, Woof 'N' Buff, Z. Oakes Dog Grooming in Uttoxeter and Turner & Pooch House Call Dog Grooming in Penkridge. Each of those four carries a note in its own listing saying so plainly, with a line to confirm details by phone before booking.

Qualifications and experience

Where a qualification is stated, it's usually City & Guilds: Dogroomin's Emily Hassell holds a Level 3 City & Guilds qualification and was working towards a Level 4 Advanced Diploma in canine behaviour and dog law; Dirty Dogs' groomers hold City & Guilds Level 2 and 3 alongside canine first-aid training; Scallywags Dog Grooming's groomer holds Level 3 and Canine First Aid training with over 10 years of experience; and both Flair Of The Dog's Lizzie Heinich and CMD Dog Grooming's Cerys Dale hold Level 2 and 3 qualifications, the latter gained at Vita Canis. Quintessential Quarters' groomer Abigail studied Animal Management at Reaseheath University and is a qualified dog first aider, while Highwood Boarding Kennels employs three fully qualified groomers. Dirty Dogs also cites over a decade of grooming experience on its Uttoxeter High Street site, and Country Canines' groomer has over 18 years behind her.

One-to-one and same-household bookings

Diamond in the WOOF books appointments one-to-one, or as a same-household group when more than one dog from the same home needs grooming, rather than mixing unfamiliar dogs together in the same session. Country Canines and Wags4me both also groom one dog at a time, and Highwood Boarding Kennels' three groomers work the same way to keep sessions calm. No business remaining on this page after the area split offers a genuinely mobile, van-based service; that side of the batch moved to the Tamworth, Lichfield and Burton upon Trent listing along with the businesses that offered it. Two newly listed businesses do come to the dog rather than the other way round: Waggy's Mobile Dog Grooming covers Stafford and nearby villages, and Turner & Pooch grooms small to medium dogs at home in Penkridge.

Cats and other animals

Tops N' Tails in Gnosall and Posh Paws of Eccleshall both groom cats as well as dogs. Every other business in this listing is confirmed for dogs only.

Reviews

13 of the 22 groomers listed here show a Google rating, taken from the business's own Google profile and linked from the listing (Dogroomin', The Grooming Barn, Diamond in the WOOF, Dirty Dogs and Posh Paws of Eccleshall); the other 18 have no rating from a source this directory can link to, so ask to see recent work or photos of previous grooms instead.

Coverage is now fairly even across all four areas, each with five or six listed groomers. The three still-unlisted businesses awaiting a confirmed phone number sit one each in Uttoxeter (two) and Penkridge (one), so a future phone-lookup pass would nudge those areas up further rather than filling any real gap.
