How to choose a dog groomer in Rugby and Lutterworth

Check how well the business is documented

Of the 28 businesses listed, three were confirmed from a first-hand working website plus at least one other independent source (marked high confidence): Bark & Bliss Pet Grooming, Happy Paws Dog Grooming and The Bearded Pooch. Twenty-two are medium confidence, usually meaning the address and phone number come from a directory listing, a Facebook page, or a phone number filled in from Google's own business listing rather than found on the groomer's own site. Three are low confidence, meaning a single directory listing or search snippet is all that could be found: Sweeney Dogs Grooming Studio, Hunt & Wilson and Waggin' Wash Dog Grooming, and each of these listings says so plainly, with a note to confirm details by phone before booking.

Duplicates worth flagging

Cuts 4 Mutts appears on one directory under two addresses, New Street and Edgecote Close, both against the same phone number; it's listed here once, under New Street, though the Edgecote Close address may be a second job site rather than an error. Two pairs of businesses in the Lutterworth villages share a postcode without being the same business: Dw Professional Groomers and Curlynsleek Professional Groomers On The Move both sit on Ashby Road in Gilmorton (LE17 5LY) but at different named addresses and with different phones, and Robinsfield Grooming shares LE17 5DR with The Bearded Pooch's Ullesthorpe salon, again at a different address and phone. All are listed separately here; check the exact address when you call if either pairing looks like it could be a mix-up.

A flagged possible closure

Poocilicious Dog Groomers, in Dunchurch, is listed here, but its own website's page title suggested it may currently be closed for maternity leave at the time of research. Call ahead before making a special trip.

Who was left out, and why

Two more leads were dropped for having no confirmed phone number: Paw Prints, on Lytham Road, and Doggy Daycare at the Willows in Dunton Bassett, whose grooming page couldn't be confirmed by phone either. "The Groom Room Rugby" was excluded as the in-store Pets at Home grooming department at Technology Drive Retail Park, in line with this directory's standing policy on national chains; a separate, independently run business trading from a residential Hillmorton address is listed here instead, as Groom Room (Hillmorton), to avoid confusing the two. The Dog House, in Gilmorton, was excluded as a day-care and exercise business with no grooming service found anywhere on its own site or directory listings. A handful of wide-radius mobile operators and businesses based well outside the coverage postcodes, including Doggy Deluxe and Em's Scruffy Pup's, along with several Coventry- and Daventry-based salons, were excluded on location alone.

Qualifications

City & Guilds training is named by two businesses here: Clip & Fluff's groomer holds a City & Guilds qualification, and Waggin' Wash Dog Grooming's mobile groomer is also City & Guilds qualified. Ask for the qualification by name if it matters to you.

One-to-one and home-based setups

Several businesses describe working with one dog at a time rather than a busy multi-dog salon floor: Grubby Paws Ltd and Sweeney Dogs Grooming Studio, both at The Locks in Hillmorton; Bark & Bliss Pet Grooming, on its salon days; and Rugby Dog Grooming, working from a home-based setting on Ruskin Close. Dog & Cat Grooming Colorful Tails Tina, Groom Room (Hillmorton), Happy Paws Dog Grooming and Labourne Family Dog Grooming are all run from a home or a converted van on a driveway rather than a shopfront.

Ask to see recent work, a reference or photographs of past grooms instead of relying on a star rating you can't check yourself.

Where they are, and where they're thin

Coverage is heaviest in the Lutterworth villages (11 confirmed groomers), followed by Rugby south, Dunchurch & villages (10) and Rugby town centre & Hillmorton (7). Within that, New Bilton and Brownsover, on the Rugby side, turned up nothing distinct from what's listed under Hillmorton, and on the Rugby south side, Wolston, Stretton-on-Dunsmore, Ryton-on-Dunsmore, Brinklow, Kilsby and Clifton-upon-Dunsmore returned only wide-radius mobile operators with no fixed local base, so none of those is listed. In the Lutterworth villages, Bitteswell, Walcote, Cotesbach, Shawell and Swinford turned up nothing at all.
