Dog grooming prices in Romford: why none are published, and what to ask instead
Unlike some nearby Essex towns, where several groomers publish a full tariff on their own website, none of the 37 dog groomers checked for this Romford, Gidea Park, Harold Wood, Collier Row, Hornchurch, Upminster and Rainham directory had a published price list at the time we checked. That's not unusual for small, independent salons and home-based groomers, which make up most of this list, but it does mean you'll need to ask rather than compare online.
Why prices aren't published
Groomers usually quote per dog rather than by a fixed rate card because the time and cost of a groom depends on the dog in front of them, not just its size. A shaved-down large dog with a short coat can take less time than a matted, thick-coated small one. Several listings in this directory are one-person or home-based businesses, which more often quote over the phone than maintain a public price list at all.
What to ask when you call
- Is the price based on breed, size or coat condition? Ask which of the three matters most to how they quote, since it varies groomer to groomer.
- Is there a matting or de-shedding surcharge? Many groomers charge extra, sometimes a lot extra, for a heavily matted coat, and some will refuse a groom and recommend a vet instead if matting is severe.
- What's included as standard? Ask whether nail clipping, ear cleaning and a sanitary trim come with the groom or cost extra.
- Is a deposit needed to book? Home-based, one-person salons in particular sometimes ask for one, especially for a first appointment.
- How long will the appointment take? Salons that groom several dogs in parallel tend to quote a shorter slot than one-to-one home groomers.
- Do they charge more for nervous or reactive dogs? A few groomers here specifically welcome nervous dogs; it's worth asking if that means a longer, and sometimes costlier, appointment.
Getting a fair comparison
Because nothing here is published, the only reliable way to compare is to ring two or three groomers in the same area with the same description of your dog: breed or mix, approximate weight, and current coat condition. Ask each one the same six questions above and write down the answers. It takes longer than reading a table, but it's the only accurate way to compare in a town where nobody has put their prices online.
