How to choose a dog groomer in Portsmouth

Dog grooming is unregulated in the UK, so the checking is on you. Portsmouth's twenty-seven listed groomers range from a salon trading for more than 60 years to Facebook-only businesses with a name, phone number and little else. Read this before you pick one.

Check how well the business is documented

Of the twenty-seven businesses in this directory, thirteen were confirmed from a first-hand website plus at least one other source (marked high confidence). Eleven are medium confidence, usually meaning the details come from a directory listing, Facebook page or a single secondary source rather than the business's own working site. Three are low confidence: House of Hound Grooming and OhMy-Dog, whose own sites returned an error on direct fetch, and Purple Pawz, whose base town is itself disputed between two sources (see below). Four more businesses found during research were left out of this directory entirely because no phone number could be confirmed: The Pukka Pooch, Waggies Mobile Dog Grooming, Havant Dog Grooming and Paws of Langstone Dog Grooming. A further six leads were dropped for lack of any confirmable detail beyond a bare Facebook page name - Dogs Of Southsea, Michelle's Mobile Dog Grooming, Wonderland Dog Grooming, Alex and The Hounds, Gosport Dog Grooming and Furtastic Mobile Grooming (the last based on Hayling Island, outside this directory's PO1–PO9 / PO12–PO16 coverage). Two Pets at Home Groom Room branches, at Havant and Waterlooville, were seen and deliberately excluded as a national chain.

One flagged address conflict

Purple Pawz trades under a Gosport Facebook page name, but a second source, a directory aggregator, places the business in the Fareham area instead. Research could not resolve which is current, so the conflict is flagged here rather than guessed at or silently corrected; ask which town the groomer actually works from before booking.

Qualifications

City & Guilds training comes up most often: Hair Of The Dog Portsmouth (Kara, who trained at Dandini's), Dandini's Dog Grooming itself, Barkingham Dog Grooming and Harvancourt Dog Grooming all cite a City & Guilds qualification, most at Level 3. Pawz & Relax Pet Grooming's Lucy holds an OCN Level 3 Diploma, and Suds and Hugs' groomer holds a Level 3 Diploma in Dog Grooming and Styling with Emmi-Pet dental training on top. Ask for the qualification by name if it matters to you.

One-to-one and home studios

Several businesses describe a one-to-one approach: Hair Of The Dog Portsmouth, Give a Dog a Comb, Suds and Hugs, Pickles Parlour, Posh Paws Boutique and OhMy-Dog all say appointments are one dog at a time, cage-free or roam-free, several working from a home studio rather than a shopfront. For an anxious, elderly or reactive dog, it is worth asking directly how a smaller studio handles a single appointment slot even where this isn't advertised on the website.

Mobile groomers

Only one of the twenty-seven businesses in this directory works from a mobile van rather than a fixed salon: Inspired Canine Grooming, covering Fareham and the surrounding Hampshire area from a climate-controlled van. If you need someone to come to you elsewhere in Portsmouth, ask a salon-based groomer whether they also travel.

Cats and small animals

Five of the twenty-seven businesses in this directory also groom cats: Scruffs Dog Grooming (which has recently introduced dedicated cat grooming days), Dandini's Dog Grooming, Sammy's Perfect Pets (cats on the first and last Friday of the month), Purple Pawz and Tina's Dog Grooming Fareham. If you keep a cat rather than, or as well as, a dog, these are the confirmed options in this directory.

No source fetched during research - Google Maps, Trustpilot, Fresha, Booksy or Yelp - showed a numeric rating on its own page; a local news article claimed a Google rating for one business without linking to the Google page itself, which doesn't meet the bar for showing a rating here. Ask to see recent work or a reference rather than relying on a star count that isn't shown here.

Where they are

Coverage is heaviest in Fratton, Gosport and Fareham (five businesses each), followed by Cosham and Waterlooville (four each) and Havant (three), with a single confirmed independent in Southsea and none at all currently listed in Portsmouth city centre itself - research found several "Portsmouth" leads that turned out, on checking the address, to sit in the Fratton postcode area instead. If you're in the centre or Southsea, the nearest well-documented option or Inspired Canine Grooming's mobile round is worth trying first.
