How to choose a dog groomer in Nottingham

Dog grooming is unregulated in the UK, so the checking is on you. Nottingham's twenty-eight listed groomers range from long-established salons to home-based one-person operations found through a single directory listing. Read this before you pick one.

Check how well the business is documented

Of the twenty-eight businesses in this directory, six were confirmed from a first-hand working website plus at least one other source (marked high confidence). Twenty-one are medium confidence, usually meaning the details come from a directory listing, Facebook page or a single secondary source rather than the business's own working site. One, Rachael's Mobile Dog Grooming in Carlton, is low confidence: its phone number and coverage area came from a secondary directory rather than the business's own page, with no street-level address beyond the general Colwick/Carlton area, and its listing here says so plainly. Two further businesses found during research, Defined Dog Grooming (Bestwood Village) and Grooming By Gail (Beeston), had a confirmed address but no phone number that could be verified independently, so both were left out of this directory entirely.

Two flagged address conflicts, and one case of mistaken identity

Linby Dog Grooming's Companies House record gives 51 Annesley Road, Hucknall, as its registered correspondence address, while a Yelp listing instead shows 105 Wighay Road for the same business; the Companies House address is treated as current here, with the alternative flagged rather than silently merged. Urban Pooch, on Westdale Lane, sits right on the boundary between Carlton and East Mapperley, and different directories tag the identical address under both suburb names; it is listed once, under Carlton, matching its NG4 postcode. Separately, Groomers Avenue Wollaton and Wollaton Pet Grooming Services both run a mobile van for the same Wollaton suburb, sharing the same regional booking aggregator, but have different addresses and phone numbers and are kept here as two distinct businesses, not one.

Who was left out, and why

Beyond the two excluded for no confirmed phone number, research turned up several more leads that don't appear in this directory. Two national in-store chains were seen and deliberately excluded: Pets & Friends' in-store grooming at its Hucknall and Mapperley branches, and the Pets at Home Groom Room in Arnold. Posh Paws Dog Grooming Limited, in West Bridgford, shows as dissolved at Companies House since December 2016, with no evidence of current trading, so it was excluded as likely closed rather than listed on stale information. Two well-documented businesses, Jazzydogz and Butterfly Dog Grooming, were excluded purely on postcode: both currently trade from NG11 addresses, just outside the NG1-NG9, NG10 and NG15 area this edition of the directory covers. A handful of other leads, including Jo Freeman Dog Grooming in Bulwell, Top Coat & Tails in Hucknall and Kata's Dog Grooming in Wollaton, were dropped for lack of a confirmed phone number, address or independent source, rather than guessed at.

Qualifications

City & Guilds training comes up most often: Smarty Paws' Leanne Stirland (Level 3, 15+ years), Canine Canalside's owner (Level 3, trained under Master Groomer Heidi Anderton LCGI), Woofs Grooming Parlour (Certified Professional Groomer and Level 2), SG Grooming and 50 Shaves Dog Grooming (both City & Guilds qualified) and Rachael's Mobile Dog Grooming (a City & Guilds course at Just 4 Paws) all cite it. Wanderfeld Groomers instead holds a Level 3 qualification with the International Certified Master Groomers-UK. Ask for the qualification by name if it matters to you.

One-to-one and home-based setups

Several businesses describe working with one dog at a time rather than a busy multi-dog salon floor: Smarty Paws (appointment-only, crate-free), Woofs Grooming Parlour, 50 Shaves Dog Grooming (home-based, on Ward Avenue), The Hairy Hound (a home-based luxury salon run by Donna in Mapperley) and Wanderfeld Groomers, which works from a purpose-built dog spa in the groomer's own garden. If a calm, single-appointment setting matters for an anxious or reactive dog, these are worth asking about directly.

Mobile groomers

Six of the twenty-eight businesses here work from a van rather than a fixed salon: Groomers Avenue Wollaton and Wollaton Pet Grooming Services (both covering Wollaton, as separate operators), Dog Grooming Beeston, Hairy Barkers Mobile Dog Groomer (NG3, NG4, NG5 and NG14), Rachael's Mobile Dog Grooming (Colwick, Carlton, Gedling, Netherfield and Arnold) and Top Dogs Mobile Dog Grooming, covering Porchester and Mapperley since 2009. If you need someone to come to you outside these rounds, ask a salon-based groomer whether they also travel.

Cats and other animals

West Bridgford Pet Parlour grooms cats and small animals alongside dogs, and Hairy Barkers Mobile Dog Groomer also grooms cats on its rounds. Everyone else in this directory is confirmed for dog grooming only.

Reviews

No business in this directory has an independently checked, dated star rating shown here. Directory aggregator sites show a 5-out-of-5 figure for Groomers Avenue Wollaton and a 4.6-star figure for Dog Grooming Beeston, but neither is confirmed on a platform this directory can verify and link to, so neither is shown. Ask to see recent work or a reference rather than relying on a star count that isn't shown here.

Where they are

Coverage is heaviest in Arnold (five businesses), followed by Nottingham centre, Hucknall and Long Eaton (four each), then West Bridgford, Carlton and Mapperley (three each), with Beeston the thinnest at two confirmed independents. If you're in a thinner area, the nearest well-documented option or a mobile groomer covering your postcode is worth trying first.
