How to choose a dog groomer in Islington, Camden and north London

Dog grooming is unregulated in the UK, so the checking is on you. This directory covers eight areas: Islington and Highbury, Holloway and Archway, Camden and Kentish Town, Hampstead and West Hampstead, Highgate and Muswell Hill, Crouch End and Hornsey, Stoke Newington and Hackney, and Kilburn and Willesden. Coverage and how well each business is documented vary sharply between them — read this before you pick one.

Confidence, and two areas that are genuinely thin

Of the 36 groomers listed here, 9 are high confidence, meaning the details were confirmed from the business's own working website plus at least one other source. 23 are medium confidence, usually meaning the details came from a single directory listing, a search result or a secondary source rather than the business's own site. The remaining 4 are low confidence: their listing carries a plain note that the details are from search results only and asks you to confirm by phone before booking. Coverage by area is also uneven, and it's worth being upfront about it: Camden and Kentish Town has only three groomers in this directory, and Highgate and Muswell Hill has just two — both are genuinely thin, not an oversight. If you're based in either, it's worth also checking a neighbouring area covered here, such as Holloway and Archway or Crouch End and Hornsey, or asking whether a groomer based nearby will travel to you.

Two unconnected businesses share the name "Foxy Groomers"

Two entirely separate businesses trade under the name Foxy Groomers, and neither is connected to the other: one is a mobile, home-based service in De Beauvoir, Islington, and the other is a salon on Crouch Hill in Crouch End run by Sophie Foxton Ray. They have different addresses, different phone numbers and no confirmed link between them. Both listings' details come from search results only, so confirm by phone which one you're calling, and what it offers, before booking either.

One phone number, more than one address

Nutts4Mutts, in Hampstead and West Hampstead, is listed here at its Fortune Green Road address, taken from its own website. The same phone number also appears on other sources attached to a different address and a different trading name, Hampstead Dog Grooming; which one is current wasn't resolved in research, so it's worth confirming the address when you call to book.

Who was left out, and why

Four businesses found during research don't appear in this directory because no confirmed phone number could be found for any of them, despite an address being known: Perfect Pooch Home Grooming (Highbury), Alldogs Of Finchley Road (Hampstead), K9 Couture London Dog Grooming (Muswell Hill) and Molly And George Grooming Salon (Hackney). A national pet-superstore chain's in-store grooming counter in Camden was also excluded, consistent with every other town in this directory. A number of other names turned up in research with no verifiable address, phone number or working website at all, mostly around Camden and Kentish Town; rather than list them as bare, unconfirmed stubs, they were left out — a phone book search or a fresh check later could fill some of those gaps.

Qualifications

City & Guilds training is the qualification that comes up most often. Beavertown Hounds and Mishka Grooming both credit a Level 3 diploma to groomer Adrian, who trained under Julie Lalou of west London's Dogs Delight. Groom Groom's Carolina de Freitas and the groomer behind Dogs By Dawson are both City & Guilds qualified, and Hackney Barkers' team holds City & Guilds qualifications between them and runs its own grooming school offering Level 2 and Level 3 courses. Nutts4Mutts' groomer has 14 years' experience working from a purpose-built cabin. Ask for the qualification by name if it matters to you.

Mobile grooming and one-to-one appointments

Only one business in this directory works from a van rather than a fixed salon: Groom Groom, covering Camden, Kentish Town, Highgate, Hampstead, Primrose Hill, Gospel Oak and Belsize Park, grooming one dog at a time since 2009. Several salon-based groomers separately describe one-to-one appointments with no overbooking, including City Paws, Doggone Fabulous and Hamster and Hound. If a calm, single-appointment setting matters for an anxious, elderly or reactive dog, these are worth asking about directly, along with The Brush Hour Pet Grooming's pick-up and drop-off service.

Cats and combined services

Three businesses confirm they also groom cats alongside dogs: Dog Grooming Camden, Filthy Hounds Pet Parlour and Hackney Barkers, with Filthy Hounds also grooming small pets. A few combine grooming with something else entirely: WagWorks Islington runs grooming alongside daycare, training and an in-house vet; Southfields Hydrotherapy & Grooming pairs grooming with canine hydrotherapy; and Just Barking offers oxygen spa treatments alongside holistic grooming.

Reviews

No rating is shown anywhere in this directory. A rating only ever appears here when a groomer's own profile on an allowed, independent review platform has been checked directly at a working link; none was confirmed for any of the 36 businesses in this round of research, even though one or two mention a star rating on their own site or in a search result that couldn't be independently checked. Ask to see recent work, or a reference, when you call, rather than assuming a business with no rating shown has no reviews at all.

Where they are

Coverage by area: Stoke Newington and Hackney (7), Islington and Highbury (6), Hampstead and West Hampstead (6), Holloway and Archway (4), Crouch End and Hornsey (4), Kilburn and Willesden (4), Camden and Kentish Town (3) and Highgate and Muswell Hill (2). If you're in one of the two thinner areas, a mobile groomer or a well-documented option in a neighbouring area is worth trying first.
