How to choose a dog groomer in Newcastle

Dog grooming is unregulated in the UK, so the checking is on you. Newcastle and Tyneside's thirty-seven listed groomers range from long-established multi-branch salons to home-based one-person operations found through a single online listing. Read this before you pick one.

Check how well the business is documented

Of the thirty-seven businesses in this directory, seven were confirmed from a working website plus at least one further corroborating source (marked high confidence): My Dog Barber's three branches (Jesmond, Low Fell and Blaydon), Wags 4 Mags, Posh Paws, Ed's Shearings Dog Grooming Studio and Scruffs to Crufts. Twenty-six are medium confidence, typically meaning the address and phone come from one or two online listings rather than the business's own working site. Four are low confidence: Alfie Doodle Dog Grooming (its own website domain no longer resolves), Bruno's Buddies and Izzy's Place Dog Grooming (both just outside the postcode range named for their area, kept under the nearest match), and Petsercise (a wider dog-care business based partly outside this town's coverage). Each low-confidence listing here says so plainly and asks you to confirm details by phone.

A dissolved company at the same address

Bows Bath Buddies, on Prince Consort Road in Gateshead, shows at Companies House as dissolved on 20 May 2025, yet its address and phone number still appeared current across several online listings. The same address and phone number are recorded here for Paws Truly Grooming Studio, whose current booking page and Google Business listing are active; rather than list what looks like the same premises twice under two names, only Paws Truly Grooming Studio appears in this directory.

Numbers and addresses worth double-checking

TattyTails' own website gives a different phone number to a separate online listing for the same Monkseaton address; both are recorded here rather than guessed at, so try the first before the second if you don't get through. Ruffs Dog Salon's street number on Chicken Road, Wallsend, is given as 60 by one source and 68 by another; this listing uses the more detailed source's number. Alpha Animal Care's listing had shown a Surrey phone number for its Jesmond address, which plainly didn't match a local business, so that number is not published here — the number shown instead comes from the business's own Google Business listing.

Chains excluded

Pets at Home Groom Room branches were seen at Newcastle Byker, Gateshead (Metrocentre) and North Shields and are not listed here, in line with this directory's focus on independent and small-chain groomers.

Qualifications

City & Guilds Level 3 training comes up most often: K9 Beauty Station's groomer (10+ years' experience) and Paws Truly Grooming Studio's Emma (20+ years) both hold it. Posh Paws' groomers are certified in canine first aid. Ed's Shearings Dog Grooming Studio is family-run, managed by Morgan, Jeff and Julie, and offers discounts for Blue Light Card, Veteran Card and Armed Forces customers.

One-to-one and home-based setups

Poochi Grooms, near Gosforth, offers one-to-one home-based grooming with no other animal in the room, aimed at nervous or reactive dogs. Penny's Dog Grooming Shed, in Tynemouth, is run by a solo groomer from what the name suggests is a garden studio, described as a peaceful setting. If a calm, single-appointment environment matters for your dog, these are worth asking about directly.

Mobile groomers

Four of the thirty-seven businesses here work mobile rather than from a fixed salon: Alfie Doodle Dog Grooming, Soapy Mutts Dog Wash (covering Newcastle, Gateshead and Durham since 2000), Coast Dog Grooming and Walking the Dog (both around North Tyneside). Confirm exactly which postcodes each one covers before booking.

Cats and other animals

Scruffypups Dog and Cat Grooming & Grooming Training (Walker) and Pink Whiskers (Dunston, Gateshead) both groom cats as well as dogs. Everyone else in this directory is confirmed for dog grooming only.

Who else was found, and left out

Two search results appeared to match the brief but turned out, on checking, to be in Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia (a business called Blossom Dog Grooming Salon) and Newcastle, Ontario, Canada (Passion4Pets Grooming Boutique), rather than Newcastle upon Tyne, and were excluded as false matches. Alfie And Bear and Pawfect Pups are genuinely based in Newcastle, in the Newburn and Chapel House areas respectively, but sit well outside the eight named areas this directory covers. Loving Touch Dog Grooming, near Rowlands Gill, is just west of the Blaydon & Ryton area but in a different postcode outside this directory's coverage. Dapper Doggies Grooming markets a mobile round covering Blaydon and Ryton among many other North East locations, but published no address, phone number or even a service-area postcode on any page found, so nothing concrete could be recorded. Pampered Paws Byker exists only as a Facebook page, with no independent address or phone found elsewhere, so it is not included either.

Reviews

No business in this directory carries a rating here. Star ratings were seen on some directory-aggregator pages during research, but none came from an independently fetched Google, Trustpilot, Fresha, Booksy or Yelp page with its own verifiable link, so none met the bar for publishing a rating. Ask to see recent work, a reference, or check the business's own social media before booking.

Where they are

Coverage is heaviest in Wallsend & North Shields (nine) and Gateshead (eight), followed by Jesmond & Heaton (five), Gosforth and Whitley Bay & Tynemouth (four each), Newcastle city centre (three), and Byker & Walker and Blaydon & Ryton (two each, the thinnest areas). If you're in a thinner area, the nearest well-documented option or a mobile groomer covering your postcode is worth trying first.
