How to choose a dog groomer in Maidstone

Dog grooming is unregulated in the UK, so the checking is on you. Maidstone's twenty-six listed groomers range from purpose-built and home-based salons with their own websites to Facebook-only or directory-only businesses with little more than a name and phone number. Read this before you pick one.

Check how well the business is documented

Of the twenty-six businesses in this directory, seventeen were confirmed from a first-hand website plus at least one other source (marked high confidence). Six are medium confidence, usually meaning the details come from a directory listing or social media page rather than the business's own working site. Three are low confidence: one salon whose own site gives a different neighbourhood than a directory listing does, one whose address and hours aren't published anywhere, and one known only from a single directory entry. Three more businesses found during research were left out of this directory entirely because no phone number could be confirmed for them, however well documented they otherwise were, including one groomer independently confirmed as trading by a village community Facebook page.

Two flagged discrepancies

Research found two cases worth flagging rather than quietly merging or guessing. Scruffbuckets' own website describes its base as Grove Green, on the east side of Maidstone, while a separate directory instead gives a Wheatfields address in the adjoining Weavering neighbourhood; the two areas overlap, so the exact address isn't confirmed here, and the listing is rated low confidence for that reason alone, not for lack of other detail. Separately, The Grooming Room (at Chart Sutton Boarding Kennels) and The Dog Salon are two distinct businesses both operating in the small Chart Sutton area; they are kept as separate listings rather than assumed to be the same business.

Qualifications

City & Guilds Level 3 comes up most often: Best In Show Maidstone's Becky Grzyb (with distinction), We Pet Care's Chris Fuller, Ted's Dog Grooming's Jacqui and Mad About Dog's Sarah all cite it, and Canine Coiffures' Beth Grainger holds City & Guilds Level 2 and 3, also with distinction. ScruffCuts' Chelsie and Shampooches Maidstone both cite an iPET/iPet Level 3 qualification. Grooming by Lauren holds a foundation degree in Animal Behavioural Science & Welfare from the University of Greenwich, and Animal Magic Dog Grooming Kent's owner cites OCN dog first aid plus City & Guilds Level 3 and 4 dog grooming and dog-walking qualifications alongside more than 40 years' experience. Ask for the qualification by name if it matters to you.

Four independent groomers, one building

ScruffCuts, Ted's Dog Grooming, Grooming by Lauren and Mad About Dog are four separate, independently owned businesses that happen to operate from the same address, Unit 16, Marlpit Farm on Wierton Road in Boughton Monchelsea, a small grooming-and-farm-shop hub. Each has its own name, owner, website and phone number; they are listed here as four businesses, not four services of one company, but it's worth knowing before you call that they share a building.

Mobile options

Five businesses in this directory are mobile rather than salon-based: K9 Styles and Muckypups Pet Services cover Maidstone itself, Lily's Mobile Dog Grooming and Canine Beautician both cover a wider area (Lily's around Maidstone, Canine Beautician across Mid Kent, specialising in small breeds), and Shampoodles runs a home salon in Linton with a paid local drop-off and pick-up option covering Loose, Coxheath and Boughton Monchelsea. If you need someone to come to you, these five are the confirmed options.

Cats as well as dogs

Three businesses in this directory are confirmed to groom cats alongside dogs: Hair of the Dog, We Pet Care and One 2 One Dog Grooming in Headcorn. Ask first if you have a cat, since most listings here don't mention it either way.

Prices are rarely published

Only two of the twenty-six businesses in this directory publish a price list: Lily's Mobile Dog Grooming (full groom from £40 for a small dog) and Daisy Doodle Grooming in Aylesford (standard groom from £50). Everyone else quotes on enquiry, so ask for a price, or an estimate based on your dog's size and coat, before booking.

Reviews

No business in this directory has an independently checked, dated star rating. Daisy Doodle Grooming states a self-reported 5.0-star Google rating from 62 reviews on its own site, which is worth noting but isn't the same as a rating checked against Google directly, so it isn't shown as a rating here. For everyone else, ask to see recent work or a reference rather than relying on a star count that isn't shown on this site.
