How to choose a dog groomer in Kendal, Windermere and Barrow

A groomer opens the door of a small quiet grooming room to show an owner whose fawn Whippet stands calmly beside her

Dog grooming is unregulated in the UK, so the checking is on you. This directory covers 30 groomers across seven areas: Kendal (LA8, LA9), Milnthorpe and Sedbergh (LA7, LA10), Windermere and Ambleside (LA22, LA23), Coniston and Hawkshead (LA21), Ulverston and Grange-over-Sands (LA11, LA12), Barrow-in-Furness (LA13, LA14), and Dalton, Askam and Millom (LA15 to LA20). This town was previously covered as part of a wider Lancaster and Morecambe page; it now has its own page, with two new areas opened up, Milnthorpe and Sedbergh, and Coniston and Hawkshead, that the old page didn't cover at all.

Where there is no groomer at all

Three named places in this directory's coverage have no independent groomer based in them, and it's worth saying so plainly rather than implying otherwise. Milnthorpe itself has none: the two businesses recorded for its area, Doggie Stylin and Great Tails, are both actually based in Sedbergh. Hawkshead has none: Alpha & Omega Dog Grooming, the only business found for the whole Coniston and Hawkshead area, is based in Coniston. And Askam-in-Furness has none: the businesses covering the wider Dalton, Askam and Millom area are based in Dalton-in-Furness and Millom, not Askam. If you're in any of these three villages, expect a drive to the nearest listed groomer, or a mobile service that happens to cover your postcode.

How well documented each listing is

Of the 30 businesses here, five are confirmed to a high standard, usually from the business's own working website or contact page: The Dog House, Mack's Pals, Barrow Dog Grooming, The Dapper Dog and The Pampered Pooch in Dalton-in-Furness. Twenty-four are medium confidence, typically meaning the phone number and address came from an online business directory or were confirmed a second way through Google's own business listings rather than the groomer's own site. One is low confidence and says so plainly on its listing: Furness Abbey Dog Grooming, a mobile groomer with no fixed address found at all. Alpha & Omega Dog Grooming in Coniston also carries a confirm-by-phone note despite its medium rating, since its own website doesn't resolve and its details come from a single cached directory listing rather than a working site, worth bearing in mind as it's the only groomer for the whole Coniston and Hawkshead area.

Websites worth knowing don't work

Two businesses have a website address on record that couldn't be reached directly during research: The Dog House (Kendal) and JustLoveDogs (Windermere). Both are still listed with their independently-confirmed phone numbers, and their domain names are corroborated by more than one independent directory, but the listings here leave out the broken link rather than send you to a dead page; call instead.

Two businesses left out for lack of a confirmed detail

Two groomers found during research for this area aren't listed here. Levens Dog Grooming, a well-documented one-to-one groomer in Levens with its own working website and a full price list, is left out because no phone number could be confirmed for it, despite everything else about it checking out. Wellness Dog Grooming, in Ambleside, is left out because no address or phone number could be independently confirmed for it at all; the only contact route found was a Facebook page that could not be fetched.

Shared premises and near-identical names

Four businesses in this directory share a building or a very similar name with another, and it's worth being clear that each is a separate business. The Dog House and Bella's Pooch Parlour both trade from 26 Market Place in Kendal, and JustLoveDogs and Studio K9 both operate out of Brantfell Place in Bowness-on-Windermere: two businesses sharing a building, not one salon under two names. Pampered Pooch, Walney and The Pampered Pooch, Dalton-in-Furness have near-identical names but are unrelated, separate businesses in different towns. All Coats And Claws and Paws With Thought Dog Grooming each have a second contact point at a second address, recorded here as extra detail on one business rather than a second listing.

Qualifications

City & Guilds training is cited by several businesses here: Bella's Pooch Parlour (Level 3, plus Level 2 in animal care), JustLoveDogs (Level 3), Dog-Gone Fabulous Grooming Parlour, Mack's Pals (Level 3) and The Dapper Dog. Alpha & Omega Dog Grooming's groomer holds City & Guilds qualifications in both animal management and professional dog grooming, and previously taught grooming courses at a school in Manchester. Luna-Clips Dog Groomer, in Ulverston, holds a Level 3 OCN qualification instead. Ask for the qualification by name if it matters to you, since most listings here don't mention one at all.

One-to-one and mobile grooming

Luna-Clips Dog Groomer and The Dapper Dog both describe working with one dog at a time rather than a busier multi-dog salon floor, worth asking about for a nervous or elderly dog. Five of the 30 businesses here work from a van rather than a fixed salon: Loobees Mobile Groom Room (Kendal), JustLoveDogs (Windermere), Posh Paws Mobile Dog Grooming (Ulverston, also covering Barrow, Dalton and Millom), Furness Abbey Dog Grooming and Soggy Doggies Grooming (both based in Barrow-in-Furness but covering a much wider stretch of the Furness peninsula). If a salon nearby is fully booked, a mobile groomer covering your postcode may be a faster option.

Reviews

10 of the 28 groomers listed here show a Google rating, taken from the business's own Google profile and linked from the listing; the others have no rating from a source this directory can link to. Ask to see recent photos of finished grooms, or a reference, rather than assuming the absence of a published rating means anything either way.

Where they are, and where they're thin

Coverage is heaviest in Kendal itself (10), followed by Barrow-in-Furness (7) and Ulverston and Grange-over-Sands (5). Windermere and Ambleside has three, Milnthorpe and Sedbergh and Dalton, Askam and Millom have two each, and Coniston and Hawkshead has just the one business, Alpha & Omega Dog Grooming, for the whole area.
