How to choose a dog groomer in Hull

Dog grooming is unregulated in the UK, so the checking is on you. Hull's twenty-one listed groomers range from long-established, well-documented salons to businesses known only from a single directory listing. Read this before you pick one.

Check how well the business is documented

Of the twenty-one businesses in this directory, ten were confirmed from a first-hand website plus at least one other source (marked high confidence). Eight are medium confidence, usually meaning the details come from a directory listing, a single secondary source, or a business's own site that couldn't be reached directly during research. Three are low confidence, found only through a directory-aggregator listing with no working website or social page to confirm services, prices or hours: The Grooming Shed Hull, The Fur Dresser and ShamPoochi Dog Grooming. Five more businesses seen during research were left out of this directory entirely because no phone number could be confirmed for them, however well documented they otherwise were: Sandy Paws & Salty Noses, Dog Grooming by Chelsea, Mr Pinks Pampered Pets, PAWS Grooming and Posh Paws.

Businesses excluded for other reasons

The Groom Inn, in Swanland, is a real business but sits in postcode HU14, outside every area covered by this directory, and was excluded as out of area rather than merged into a nearby one. Happy Paws Spa, Bonnie Groomers and Creatures Comfort all surfaced only inside a single aggregated 'best of' listing, with no independent address, phone number or second source found for any of the three, so none is listed. A possible lead for a Kirk Ella-based groomer, found on Companies House, could not be matched to any confirmed trading name and so isn't listed either. One national chain branch, Pets at Home Groom Room in Anlaby, was seen and deliberately excluded, in line with this directory's policy on chains.

Duplicate names and address conflicts

Five records in this directory needed a judgement call rather than a straightforward listing. Noah's Ark Dog Grooming previously traded from the same Wassand Street address and phone number as 'The Dog Wash Hull'; that name's domain has since expired, so it's listed once, as Noah's Ark. The Dog House trades from two premises under the same name, its main Hessle Road salon and a second site in Anlaby Common with a different recorded phone number; this listing covers the Hessle Road address only. Top Dog Salon & Spa's own current website gives a Holderness Road address, while older directory listings give two other addresses for a business of the same name; the salon's own site is treated as current here. Top 'N' Tails Dog Grooming by Adelle, in Cottingham, could not be resolved as the same business or a different one from a similarly named groomer at another Cottingham address, so only Adelle's better-documented Overland Road salon is listed. All Pets Hessle and The Grooming Shed Hull each have two phone numbers recorded from different sources; both are given here since neither could be confirmed as more current, so try the other if one doesn't connect.

Qualifications

City & Guilds training comes up most often: 4 Paws Hull Dog Grooming (Cara, a distinction in the Level 3 Diploma plus a BTEC Level 2 in animal care), Salobrena Dog Grooming (trained at Bishop Burton College to Level 3, also a Kennel Club Assured Breeder), Treasured Paws Dog Grooming (Level 2 and 3 in both Dog Grooming and Animal Management) and Bark and Sparkle (a full City & Guilds course plus Pet Emergency First Aid across the team) all name a specific qualification. Demi's Posh Dogs holds a Level 3 Diploma in Animal Management, and Dogoholics is accredited with the iPET Network rather than City & Guilds. Ask for the qualification by name if it matters to you.

One-to-one and cage-free salons

Several businesses describe a one-to-one or cage-free approach: Collar & Comb (locked-door, crate-free, by appointment only), Demi's Posh Dogs and Salobrena Dog Grooming (one dog at a time), Top 'N' Tails Dog Grooming by Adelle (one-to-one, cage-free), Top Dog Salon & Spa and The Dog House (cage-free, open-plan), and Jojoes Dog Grooming, which deliberately limits how many dogs it takes each day. For an anxious, elderly or reactive dog, it's worth asking directly how a salon handles a single appointment slot even where this isn't advertised on its website.

Mobile groomers

Only one of the twenty-one businesses in this directory, Park and Bark Hull, works from a van rather than a fixed salon, covering in and around Hull; it needs parking directly outside your home and access to a mains socket. If you're outside its round, it's worth asking a salon-based groomer whether they also travel: Treasured Paws Dog Grooming, for instance, lists coverage across most of east and central Hull despite being based at a fixed salon on Bergen Way.

Cats and other pets

Collar & Comb, in Hessle, also grooms cats and clips small animals' nails alongside dogs. All Pets Hessle is a pet shop selling live small animals, including rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters and gerbils, alongside its dog grooming service, though it doesn't say it grooms anything beyond dogs.

Hull city centre itself has no business in this directory with a confirmed phone number from this research pass; the nearest options are the west Hull cluster a short distance away.
