How to choose a dog groomer in Hastings and Ashford

Dog grooming is unregulated in the UK, so the checking is on you. This directory covers thirty-eight groomers across eight areas spanning East Sussex and Kent, from long-established salons to home-based, one-person operations found through a single online listing. Read this before you pick one.

Check how well the business is documented

Of the thirty-eight businesses listed, sixteen were confirmed from a first-hand working website plus at least one other source (marked high confidence). Seventeen are medium confidence, usually meaning the details come from a directory listing, a Facebook page, or a phone number confirmed through Google's own business listing rather than the groomer's site. Seven of the medium-confidence records (Four Clean Paws, The Fairy Tails, One 2 One Dog Grooming, Smart Dogs, Top Dogs and Tails, The Dog Groomer, and Dawns Dog Grooming Dover) had their phone number added this way after the initial research pass. Five businesses are low confidence, and their listing here says so plainly: Pawfect Perfection Cat & Dog Groomers, GoochiPoochi, Cuts And Clips, Sophie's Dog Grooming and Auntie Jens' Dog Grooming. For all five, confirm by phone what's on offer, the exact address and the cost before booking.

Which areas are thin

Coverage is uneven across the eight areas. Battle and Rye is the thinnest, with only three confirmed businesses (Luckyz Dog Grooming and Starz Dog Grooming & Microchip Implanting in Battle, and Divine K9 Dog Grooming Salon in Rye) covering a wide rural area; a handful of other Battle-based names turned up during research but had no confirmed phone number anywhere and were left out rather than published on name alone. Seven leads were dropped on that basis alone, despite having an address or other detail: Coastal Cuts Dog & Cat Grooming Parlour (Hastings), Hound Town Studios (Bexhill), Spot On Dog Grooming (Tenterden), Lisa's Groom Room (Folkestone and Hythe, where two directory pages gave two different partial numbers and neither could be confirmed), Short Bark & Sides (Dover and Deal), Em's Paw Pals (Dover and Deal, despite publishing the most detailed price list found in this research) and Milner & Hall Dog Grooming Company (Sevenoaks and Tonbridge). National in-store chains were also excluded on principle at Hastings, Bexhill and Folkestone. A phone-confirmation pass after this listing may bring some of the excluded seven back into a future edition.

Flagged conflicts to ask about

Two things are worth raising when you call. Pawfect Perfection Cat & Dog Groomers gives a Bexhill-on-Sea base on its own site, but a separate directory listing shows a different address, in Fairlight near Hastings, and a different phone number under the same trading name; the two sources disagree on both, so it may be the same mobile groomer with inconsistent contact details across the web, or two similarly named operators. One 2 One Dog Grooming, on London Road in Bexhill, is a distinct business from a same-named salon in Headcorn, well outside this directory's coverage area; don't confuse the two when searching online.

City & Guilds training comes up most often: Gillsmans Dog Grooming Salon & School's stylists (who also teach Level 2 and 3 courses on site), Luckyz Dog Grooming (Level 2 and 3), Tail Blazers Mobile Dog Grooming (Level 3 Diploma in Dog Grooming and Salon Management, plus canine first aid and an animal Reiki diploma), The Pup Hut & Strut (Level 3, IPET), Smart Pooches (qualified to the highest level, canine-first-aid trained), Pooch's Palace (Level 2 and 3) and Auntie Jens' Dog Grooming (Level 3, pet-first-aid certified and DBS checked) all cite it specifically. Ask for the qualification by name if it matters to you.

Mobile groomers

Six of the thirty-eight businesses here work from a van rather than a fixed salon: Pawfect Perfection (Bexhill), Tail Blazers Mobile Dog Grooming (Ashford, covering Wye, Hythe, Tenterden, Charing, Hamstreet and Sellinge), Give A Dog A Comb (a wide ring of villages around Tenterden), Heads and Tails Mobile Dog Grooming (Deal and Dover), Pooch's Palace (roughly 15 miles around Sevenoaks, including Tonbridge and Royal Tunbridge Wells) and Sevenoaks Dog Grooming. If you need someone to come to you outside these rounds, ask a salon-based groomer whether they also travel.

Cats and other animals

Most groomers here are confirmed for dogs only, but a few also take cats or other pets: Tails of St Leonards runs a dedicated cat-grooming session twice a month, TJ's Dog and Cat Grooming Boutique grooms both, and A-Z Animal Care in Bethersden also grooms cats and small pets including guinea pigs, rabbits and tortoises. Ask to see recent work, a reference, or a business's own Google listing when you call, rather than assuming a groomer has no reputation just because nothing is shown here.

Where they are

Sevenoaks and Tonbridge has the most listed businesses (seven), followed by Hastings, Ashford, Folkestone and Hythe, and Dover and Deal (five each), then Bexhill and Tenterden (four each), with Battle and Rye the thinnest at three. If you're in a thinner area, check the mobile groomers above before assuming there's nothing nearby.
