How to choose a dog groomer in Gloucester

Dog grooming is unregulated in the UK, so the checking is on you. The thirty-four groomers listed here range from salons trading more than thirty years to home-based one-person operations found through a single directory listing. Read this before you pick one.

Check how well the business is documented

Of the thirty-four businesses in this directory, thirteen were confirmed from a first-hand working website plus at least one other source (marked high confidence). Nine are medium confidence, usually meaning the details come from a directory listing or a single secondary source rather than the business's own working site; two of those, Top Pawfection Dog Grooming and Cheltenham Scamps Grooming Parlour, had their phone number confirmed independently through Google Places rather than a website. Twelve are low confidence: their listing here says plainly that details are from search results only and should be confirmed by phone before booking.

Duplicates and conflicts flagged in research

A few businesses needed a judgement call. Bark 'n' Bubbles Dog Grooming's own site and a directory both give its Moor Street premises, but with transposed digits in the postcode; the business's own site was used. The Dog House Gloucester's phone number turned up against two different addresses, in Quedgeley and near Dursley; the Quedgeley address is used here as it falls inside this town's coverage. Doggylicious Cheltenham's own site says it recently relocated to Churchdown, though one directory still shows an earlier Cheltenham address, so its current base is worth confirming when you call. Smudgers Mutts Dog Grooming & Home Boarding's Companies House record and a directory listing disagree on its postcode; the Companies House address is used. Skyvana K9 Styling appears under two slightly different trading names with two different mobile numbers for the same Bisley address, and is listed once here. Madison's Canine Grooming appears identically on both Gloucester and Stroud directory pages; it is one business, listed once, under Hucclecote.

Who was left out, and why

Research turned up several more leads that don't appear in this directory. K9Bubbles in Churchdown and Regency Dog Groomer near Cheltenham were found only through a Facebook page or a bare directory mention, with no address or phone recoverable by any method tried. Dog Grooming With Leah and Crofts Groom Room, both in Tewkesbury, and Red Head Dog Grooming near Stroud, were found by name but with no address or phone attached anywhere located. About The Dog, a multi-branch brand, names a branch near Stroud but gives no street address for it, so it is excluded rather than listed on a postcode alone. Springfield Kennels & Cat Hotel near Cheltenham is primarily a boarding kennels and cattery with no confirmed dog-grooming service, so it sits outside this directory's scope. Pets at Home Groom Room, seen in both Gloucester and Cheltenham, is excluded as a national chain, per this directory's standing rule. Muddy Paws 'N' Claws Groom Room in Highnam and Bilbo's Dog Shop & Groom in Blakeney are real independents just outside the area this edition covers. Finally, four businesses with a confirmed address, Head2Tail Pet Grooming, Scruffy's Dog Grooming, Pegasus House Veterinary Centre, Cattery and Groomers, and Gone to the Dogs Mobile Dog Grooming, are left out for lack of a confirmed phone number anywhere researched.

Qualifications

Two salons cite the International Certificate for Master Groomers (ICMG): The Lady and the Tramp Grooming Salon & Spa, whose owner Carol also runs a grooming academy from the same premises, and The Dog's Frollox, where Tracy trained as an ICMG in early 2021. City & Guilds training comes up at Shaggy Chic Dog Grooming (level 3), Barking Beauties Dog Grooming (Leah, levels 2 and 3) and Grooming Marvellous (Sally). Golden Paws Grooming runs its own City & Guilds-linked academy, ICMG UK, from its Stonehouse premises. Ask for the qualification by name if it matters to you.

One-to-one and home-based setups

Several businesses describe working with one dog at a time rather than a busy salon floor: Suds n Noses (Amy, Quedgeley), Fiona Grooming Dog Parlour (Churchdown), Clip and Snip Professional Dog Grooming (home-based, Hardwicke), Oscar's Dog Grooming (one-to-one appointments for nervous and anxious dogs, Quedgeley), Skyvana K9 Styling (Bisley), Mims Dog Grooming (home-based, Northway) and Top Paw Grooming and Madison's Canine Grooming (both home-based, Abbeymead and Abbeydale). If a calm, single-appointment setting matters for an anxious dog, these are worth asking about directly.

Mobile groomers

Only two of the thirty-four businesses here work from a van rather than a fixed salon: Dial a Dog Wash Gloucester, a local franchise based in Innsworth next to Churchdown, and Swishy Tails Mobile Dog Grooming, based in Chalford Hill on the eastern edge of Stroud. If you need someone to come to you outside these two, ask a salon-based groomer whether they also travel; Oscar's Dog Grooming and Ruff 'n' Ready, for example, both say on their own sites that they cover several towns beyond their base.

Cats and other animals

Doggylicious Cheltenham and Golden Paws Grooming both groom cats alongside dogs. Everyone else in this directory is confirmed for dog grooming only.

Reviews

No star rating is shown for any business in this edition. Several business sites and directory pages quote ratings, but none of them were checked against an allowed independent source, such as a linked Google Maps, Trustpilot, Fresha, Booksy or Yelp page, so none are shown here rather than repeating an unverifiable number. Ask to see recent work, or a reference, before booking.

Where they are

Coverage is heaviest in Cheltenham (eight) and Quedgeley and Stroud (six each), followed by Tewkesbury (five), then Gloucester city centre, Hucclecote and Churchdown (three each). If you're in a thinner area, the nearest well-documented option, or a mobile groomer covering your postcode, is worth trying first.
