How to choose a dog groomer in Dumfries, Galloway and the Scottish Borders

Dog grooming is unregulated in the UK, so the checking is on you. This edition is unusual: it bundles the whole of Dumfries and Galloway, the Scottish Borders and the Berwick-upon-Tweed corner of Northumberland into one directory of eight areas, roughly 160 miles end to end. A groomer in Stranraer is no use to an owner in Kelso, so start with the area chips at the top of the town page and read this guide for what sits behind the listings.

How the areas break down

Sixty-four groomers are published: Dumfries (DG1 and DG2) 11; Castle Douglas, Kirkcudbright and Dalbeattie 9; Galashiels, Selkirk and Peebles 10; Hawick and Jedburgh 10; Kelso, Duns and Berwick-upon-Tweed 9; Annan and Gretna 6; Stranraer and Newton Stewart 6; Lockerbie and Moffat 3. Two districts were added to the areas during research: DG5 for Dalbeattie, which holds two of the published groomers, and TD6 for Melrose, which currently holds none.

Some places within those areas are genuinely thin. Kirkcudbright (DG6) has no published groomer at all: the only business found there had no address or phone that could be confirmed. Lockerbie and Moffat together have three. Newton Stewart has one, Peebles has one (and its owner says he is the only groomer in the town), Duns has one, at Chirnside, and Kelso has two. Melrose has none confirmed. If you live in one of those spots, expect to travel or to book a mobile groomer, and expect the nearest salons to be booked ahead.

How well each business is documented

Of the 64, 41 are marked high confidence, meaning the address and phone were confirmed on the business's own website or on at least two independent sources that agree. Nineteen are medium confidence, usually a single listing plus a live Facebook page, or sources that disagree on a detail such as the address. Four are low confidence and say so on their pages, with a note to confirm by phone before travelling: Being Ernest in Dalbeattie, Buster & Co near Stranraer, Pet Alert in Hawick and Rub-A-Dug-Dug at Harestanes near Ancrum. Each of those rests on one online listing and nothing else could be found.

Two phone numbers, two addresses

Eleven of the businesses here show a second phone number. In every case the two numbers came from different sources that both looked current, typically a landline on one listing and a mobile on another, and no phone call was made to settle which is right. Both are shown, the first as the main line; if one goes unanswered, try the other. Several businesses also appear at two addresses online, among them Tidy Paws in Moffat, Happy Legs at Bridge of Dee, Krista's Doggy Services near Selkirk, 4 Paws Grooming in Berwick and McLaren's Mutts in Annan; their pages say which address is current and why, but confirm where to come when you book. Scottish landlines here keep their five-digit area codes, for example 01387 for Dumfries, 01896 for Galashiels and 01450 for Hawick.

Who was left out, and why

Five businesses were found but had no phone number that could be confirmed on any source, and are not listed: Top Coats at Locharbriggs, All Things Animal on White Sands in Dumfries, the local Dial a Dog Wash franchise in Dumfries, Crinan Kuts at Dalbeattie and Pet Nanny in Kirkcudbright. The in-store salons of the national pet-shop chain in Dumfries, Galashiels and Berwick are excluded as a chain. A coin-operated self-service wash bay at Spittal, Berwick, is not a groomer. A pet shop and dog cafe on Glasgow Road in Dumfries and a dog-care business at Bridge of Urr could not be confirmed as offering grooming. Groomers in districts outside the eight areas, including Langholm, Canonbie, Lauder, Earlston, Coldstream, Eyemouth and Innerleithen, are real but not covered in this edition, and the many Carlisle groomers that appear on Annan and Gretna searches belong to the Carlisle directory.

Qualifications and experience

Grooming itself needs no licence, so look for what a groomer says about training. City and Guilds is the most common claim: Wuffians at Lochanhead, The Barkin Barber at Duncow, Maude & Eddie's at Chirnside, CC Grooms in Selkirk (a Level 3 diploma, 2023) and Joni's studio in Galashiels (part A of the Level 3 introductory qualification). Ashleys Grooming Room in Lockerbie holds a BTEC Level 3 plus NC and HNC animal care. Dunragit Grooming near Stranraer is headed by a Guild of Master Groomers member with over 25 years' experience. Buddy's in Hawick holds a dog grooming diploma and is a registered microchip implanter. Experience claims worth noting: Muddy Mutts cites 35 years, Shireen's at Kirkton over 25, Little Dog Cabin has groomed since 1998, Cairnsmore since 2006, Precious Paws in Jedburgh since 2008 and Lola's in Stranraer since 2014. Where boarding is offered alongside grooming, that side is licensed by the council: Furbabies and Glenkens in New Galloway, Happy Hounds and Krista's near Selkirk.

Nervous dogs and one-to-one settings

A striking number of groomers here pitch themselves at anxious dogs. Pawlished Grooming at Parkgate, The Grooming Lounge in Dumfries, Little Dog Cabin, Wot A Clip! at Scremerston and Furbabies all groom one-to-one, and Wot A Clip! works with no cages and gives garden breaks. Summerville at Clarencefield offers a meet-and-treat introductory visit, CC Grooms runs fear-free desensitisation sessions, Suds 'N' Dugs at Springholm describes itself as a low-volume alternative to a busy salon, and The Pawfect Spa in Stranraer describes a slow, patient approach. Mucky Paws in Annan, Dixie Dogs in Dalbeattie, Border Pet Sitting & Grooming at Eastriggs and Springfern at Leswalt each state a focus on nervous, reactive or rescue dogs. Muddy Mutts grooms in the dog's own home, which removes the journey altogether.

Mobile, collection and travelling in

Four confirmed mobile services cover the region: Muddy Mutts (home visits from Cleughbrae), The Barkin Barber (van from Duncow), Nithview (door to door from Auldgirth) and Wendy's Wag & Wheels (van from Tweedmouth, seven days a week). Pet Alert in Hawick is listed as mobile but unverified. Cairnsmore at Terregles runs a van alongside its salon, covering roughly 20 miles. Ashleys in Lockerbie, Wuffians and Strip 'n' Go in Tweedmouth offer collection and delivery. Several salons say they draw from a wide catchment: Waggles in Galashiels covers Peebles and Innerleithen, Precious Paws covers Jedburgh, Kelso, Melrose and Hawick, and Little Dog Cabin is listed across Galashiels, Selkirk and Peebles.

Cats, rabbits and other extras

If you have more than dogs, nine businesses groom cats too: The Grooming Room in Dumfries, Sallywags in Gretna, Emma's Laundromutt in Castle Douglas (rabbits as well), Suds N Scissors near Stow, Hairy Bairns and Pixie Dogz in Hawick (Pixie Dogz takes small animals), Precious Paws in Jedburgh, Dogs Body Design in Kelso and 4 Paws Grooming in Berwick. For microchipping, Buddy's in Hawick does home visits and Emma's Laundromutt offers it in the salon. Whitglen outside Hawick adds canine hydrotherapy and a secure paddock; K-9 Grooming in Galashiels adds dental care; Norfolk Terriers North East in Tweedmouth specialises in small and toy breeds and wire-coat hand stripping.

Hours

Thirty-nine of the 64 publish opening hours. The pattern is short weeks and early finishes: three-day weeks at McLaren's Mutts and Pooches Grooming, Tuesday to Thursday 10 to 2 at Emma's Laundromutt, and weekday-only opening at Summerville, Cairnsmore, Top Knots & Trims and Hairy Bairns. Late slots exist but are rare: Little Dog Cabin to 8pm on weekdays, Hairy Bairns to 8pm, Agnes' salon in Hawick to 7pm six days a week, Suds N Scissors to 7pm on Thursdays. Tidy Paws in Moffat and Little Dog Cabin offer weekend appointments. Where no hours are shown, the business has not published any; ask.

No rating is shown for any groomer in this edition. Ratings on this site come only from independent review platforms with a verifiable link and at least three reviews, and no business here meets that bar: one has a single review on an allowed platform, five others have a page with no reviews at all, and the rest have no eligible page that could be found. Star ratings that appear on other listing sites were not used. Ask a neighbour, or ask the groomer whether you can stay for the first session; Little Dog Cabin says owners may.

Before you book

• Check the area chip: a Galashiels salon is a long way from Stranraer.
• For the four low-confidence entries, ring before you travel.
• Where two numbers or two addresses are shown, confirm which is current.
• Say if your dog is nervous, elderly or reactive; more than a dozen businesses here list that as a speciality.
• Ask what the groom includes and whether hand stripping, teeth cleaning or collection is extra; only two groomers publish any prices, covered in the prices guide.
• Several businesses' own websites have gone dead while their Facebook pages stay live; the phone is the reliable route.
