How to choose a dog groomer in Crawley

Dog grooming is unregulated in the UK, so the checking is on you. Crawley's thirty-four listed groomers span long-established Three Bridges salons, home studios and mobile vans reached only through a search listing. Read this before you pick one.

Check how well the business is documented

Of the thirty-four businesses in this directory, fifteen were confirmed from a first-hand working website plus at least one other source (marked high confidence). Seventeen are medium confidence, usually meaning the details come from an online listing or a single secondary source rather than the business's own working site. Two are low confidence: Kerrell's Mobile Dog Grooming, a Facebook-only mobile groomer, and Priory Paws Dog Grooming, booked by Facebook message with no full street address found; both listings say so plainly and ask you to confirm details by phone before booking.

East Grinstead is thin

Only two groomers could be independently confirmed for East Grinstead: Digby's Dog Grooming & Boutique and Woodland Tails Dog Grooming. Several other names came up repeatedly in research, but none had a confirmable address, postcode or phone number in anything that could be checked directly, so they aren't listed here. If you're in East Grinstead, these two are genuinely the best-documented options this directory could confirm; worth widening your search or asking locally if neither suits.

One unresolved address, and a two-branch local operator

Digby's Dog Grooming & Boutique appears at two different addresses across the sources checked for this research, 11 Mill Way and 74 High Street, and its own website did not load when checked directly. This listing uses the High Street address, as it appears on more of the sources checked, but the conflict isn't resolved: confirm by phone which address is current before visiting. Separately, Merryweathers operates two branches inside this directory's coverage area, one at Hillier Garden Centre in Horsham and one on Sussex Road in Haywards Heath, both run by the same company, Merryweather Grooming Ltd. Each is listed under its own area since they're two real branches of a small local business, not a duplicated entry or a national chain.

Chains excluded

A regional grooming-spa chain with branches seen near Haywards Heath and Dorking, and a national in-store chain seen for East Grinstead, were both left out of this directory on principle: it covers independent and small local operators, not multi-site retail chains.

Qualifications

City & Guilds training comes up most often: DogTails Grooming's groomers, Muddy Paws Grooming Studio's Clara Seddon (Level 3), Merryweathers' groomers at both branches, The Betchworth Barkery (Level 3 Diploma, also a British Dog Groomers' Association member) and Dorking Dogs all cite it. Fur Real Mobile Grooming and Amber Polly Pets both hold an OCN or City & Guilds Level 3 qualification for mobile work, and Hetty's proprietor Tracy adds a Level 4 canine hydrotherapy qualification and Emmi-Pet ultrasonic teeth cleaning certification to her Level 3 grooming base. Ask for the qualification by name if it matters to you.

One-to-one and home-based setups

Several businesses describe working with one dog at a time rather than a busy salon floor: The Grooming Studio (a home garden studio by Horsham Park), Hetty's (one-to-one, in Coolham), Groom Dorking (one-to-one, in Beare Green) and Priory Paws Dog Grooming (one-to-one, in Reigate). If a calm, single-appointment setting matters for an anxious or reactive dog, these are worth asking about directly; The Paw Shed in Reigate also offers isolated "Hideaway" salons for anxious dogs at no extra cost.

Mobile groomers

Three of the thirty-four businesses here work from a van or come to your home rather than a fixed salon: Kerrell's Mobile Dog Grooming (covering Crawley, Lingfield and East Grinstead), Fur Real Mobile Grooming (based on West Street, also grooms from the groomer's own home) and Amber Polly Pets (a Beare Green studio plus mobile rounds across Dorking, Holmwood, Newdigate, Ockley, Capel and Rusper). If you need someone to come to you outside these rounds, ask a salon-based groomer whether they also travel.

Cats

Dainty Dogs and Muddy Paws Grooming Studio both confirm cat grooming alongside dogs. Everyone else in this directory is confirmed for dog grooming only.

Reviews

No business in this directory carries a star rating here. Some sites make their own claims, Stop Drop and Paws states over 250 five-star Google reviews and a 2023 neighbourhood award, for instance, but none of these claims could be checked against a fetched, independently verifiable review page, so none is shown. Ask to see recent work or a reference rather than relying on a business's own claim about its reviews.

Where they are

Coverage is heaviest in Horsham (eight) and Crawley town centre and Three Bridges (seven), followed by Redhill and Reigate (five), Ifield and Bewbush (four), Haywards Heath and Dorking (three each), and Burgess Hill and East Grinstead the thinnest at two confirmed independents each. If you're in a thinner area, the nearest well-documented option or a mobile groomer covering your postcode is worth trying first.
