How to choose a dog groomer in Chesterfield and Mansfield
Dog grooming is unregulated in the UK, so the checking is on you. This directory covers 30 businesses across eight areas straddling north Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire: Chesterfield town centre, Staveley & Brimington, Clay Cross & North Wingfield, Bolsover & Shirebrook, Mansfield, Sutton-in-Ashfield & Kirkby-in-Ashfield, Worksop, and Matlock & Alfreton. Read this before you pick one.
Check how well the business is documented
Of the 30 businesses listed, 6 were confirmed from a first-hand working website plus at least one other source (marked high confidence): Furst Class Lounge, Natalie's Dog Salon, Total Dog Grooming, Hardwick Hounds, Renescent Dog Grooming and The Hound Hut. Twenty-three are medium confidence, usually meaning the details come from the business's own simpler site, a Facebook page, or a listing rather than a fully independent cross-check. One, Gracie's Grooming in Mansfield, is low confidence: beyond its own basic website, no further detail on the groomer's name, services, prices or hours could be confirmed, and its listing here says so plainly, with a note to confirm everything by phone.
Which areas are thin
Coverage is not even across the eight areas. Clay Cross & North Wingfield and Sutton-in-Ashfield & Kirkby-in-Ashfield are the thinnest, with only one confirmed independent business each: Natalie's Dog Salon in Clay Cross, and Coxmoor House Pet Grooming, which is technically in Kirkby-in-Ashfield rather than Sutton-in-Ashfield itself. Staveley & Brimington is also thin, with two: Staveley Dog Wash and Short Bark & Sides. If you're in one of these three areas, a mobile groomer covering your postcode, or the nearest well-documented option in a neighbouring area, may be worth trying alongside the local listing. By contrast, Mansfield and Worksop are the best covered, with seven confirmed businesses each, followed by Chesterfield town centre with five and Bolsover & Shirebrook and Matlock & Alfreton with three and four respectively.
Who was left out, and why
Two businesses found during research had no confirmed phone number and are not listed here: Happy Hounds Dog Grooming Staveley, which had only a Facebook presence with no address either, and Hounds Grooming in Walton, whose phone number was visible on an online listing but masked behind a reveal control that could not be read in full. A third, Pets & Friends in Sutton-in-Ashfield, is a multi-branch pet-shop chain with in-store grooming, the same chain excluded from this directory's other East Midlands towns, so it is left out here too despite having a confirmed phone number. A number of other leads, mostly Facebook-only pages or businesses whose domains had lapsed or stopped resolving, were also ruled out for lack of a verifiable address or phone; none were guessed at or invented.
A borderline postcode worth knowing about
K9 Cuts Professional Grooming trades from Market Street in Shirebrook but carries a Mansfield postal address; it's listed here under Bolsover & Shirebrook, by its NG20 postcode district, not its postal town, so check the area listing rather than assuming from the address alone.
Qualifications
City & Guilds training comes up most often: Poodlicious Pet Spa & Boutique, Knotty Tails (Level 3), Coxmoor House Pet Grooming (Level 3), Renescent Dog Grooming (Level 3 Diploma) and Cloud K9 Grooming & Styling (Level 3, gained in July 2017 with Prince's Trust support) all cite it. Hardwick Hounds says all its stylists hold a Level 3 Diploma, though it doesn't name the awarding body. Natalie's Dog Salon instead holds a Level 3 in Dog Grooming and Salon Management and a Canine First Aid certificate through iPet Network, alongside a BSc (Hons) in Human Biology. Ask for the qualification by name if it matters to you.
One-to-one and home-based setups
Several businesses describe working with one dog at a time rather than a busy multi-dog salon floor: Natalie's Dog Salon (one-to-one appointments only), Coxmoor House Pet Grooming (one-to-one), Lou's Pawfect Groom (a calm, one-to-one home salon), and Peak Pups, which grooms from a woodland cabin with no caging and no mixing between dogs. If a calm, single-appointment setting matters for an anxious or older dog, these are worth asking about directly.
Mobile groomers
Three of the 30 businesses here work from a van rather than a fixed salon: Kelpie and Co Mobile Dog Grooming (based in Bolsover), Knotty Tails (Mansfield Woodhouse) and Blenheim & Blue, which covers a wide stretch from Matlock across to Chesterfield, Clay Cross, Alfreton, Bakewell and Wirksworth. If you're in one of the thinner areas, ask a mobile groomer whether their round already covers your postcode.
Cats and other animals
Poodlicious Pet Spa & Boutique, Coxmoor House Pet Grooming and Blenheim & Blue all confirm cat grooming alongside dogs. Everyone else in this directory is confirmed for dog grooming only.
Grooming alongside daycare
Two businesses run grooming as part of a wider daycare operation: Rose Cottage Doggy Daycare in Chesterfield (trading as Dogland Ltd, primarily daycare and boarding with a grooming-booking option) and Total Dog Grooming in Worksop (part of My Total Dog, combining grooming, daycare and dog training). Worth knowing if you're looking for one provider to cover both.
Reviews
No business in this directory carries a rating here. During research, no Google Maps, Trustpilot, Fresha, Booksy or Yelp review page was independently fetched and confirmed for any of the 30 businesses, so none is shown, in line with this directory's rule of never copying a star rating from a secondary source. Ask to see recent work, or a reference, when you call.
Where they are
Mansfield and Worksop have the most confirmed businesses (seven each), followed by Chesterfield town centre (five), Matlock & Alfreton (four), Bolsover & Shirebrook (three), and Staveley & Brimington, Clay Cross & North Wingfield and Sutton-in-Ashfield & Kirkby-in-Ashfield the thinnest, at two, one and one confirmed independents respectively.
