How to choose a dog groomer in Cardiff

Dog grooming is unregulated in the UK, so the checking is on you. This directory covers eight areas around Cardiff, from the city centre out to Penarth, Barry, Caerphilly and Newport, with twenty-nine groomers ranging from long-established salons to home-based one-person operations found through a single online listing. Read this before you pick one.

Cardiff centre and Cathays has only one confirmed groomer

The CF10/CF24 core covering Cardiff city centre and Cathays turned up only one business with a confirmed phone number: The Dogs Bullocks Mobile Dog Grooming, a van service based near The Boulevard and Central Square rather than a walk-in salon. That reflects what the area actually is, mostly student housing, offices and the stadium and retail district, rather than a gap in this directory's research. Anyone in the city centre or Cathays wanting a fixed salon will need to look at a neighbouring area, such as Canton, Grangetown, Roath or Penylan.

Check how well the business is documented

Of the twenty-nine businesses in this directory, eight were confirmed from a working website plus at least one other independent source (marked high confidence). Seventeen are medium confidence, usually meaning the details come from an online listing, a Facebook page, or a phone number confirmed independently after the original source could not be relied on. Four are low confidence: Cardiff Mobile Dog Groomer, Shampooch Groomers/Home Boarding, Animaltastic Dog Groomers & Pet Sitter and GGS Refreshing Paws Dog Grooming. Each of these carries only a single online listing as its source, and each listing here says plainly that the details are from search results only, so confirm them by phone before booking.

Who was left out, and why

Seven businesses turned up in research but do not appear in this directory because no phone number could be confirmed for them from any source: Waggy Tails Groomers (two conflicting addresses for the same name, neither with a usable number), The Dog House Groomer, Bow-Wow Grooming (a mobile van in Llanedeyrn, not to be confused with the separately listed Bow-Wow Boutique and Spa), Pretty Pooch Dog Grooming Salon, Lottie's Elite Mobile Dog Grooming, Cockers Cut'z, and Heads 'n' Tails Pet Services, whose own website no longer resolves. Three branches of a national in-store chain, Pets at Home Groom Room, were also excluded as a franchise rather than an independent local business. A further set of businesses that appeared repeatedly in research sit outside the eight named areas altogether, in Rhondda Cynon Taf, the Vale of Glamorgan beyond Barry and Penarth, and elsewhere in South Wales, and were left out on postcode grounds rather than stretched to fit.

Two name clashes worth knowing about

Bow-Wow Boutique and Spa, a fixed salon on Ipswich Road in Penylan, and Bow-Wow Grooming, a mobile van in Llanedeyrn, are two unrelated businesses that share part of a name; only the salon has a confirmed phone number and appears here. Separately, Mucky Pups Grooming School & Salon is recorded at its current Maryport Road address, confirmed by the business's own website, after an older search result placed a business of the same name at a different Woodville Road address with a different phone number.

Qualifications

City & Guilds training comes up most often: FURst Impressions' Paula Purnell (also a member of the British Dog Groomers' Association), Paws 4 Thought's Kay (Level 2 and 3) and Grooming Marvellous-Machen's groomer (Level 3, alongside an OCN Level 3 Diploma) all cite it. Ask for the qualification by name if it matters to you, since grooming itself is not a licensed trade in the UK.

Mobile groomers

Four of the twenty-nine businesses here work from a van rather than a fixed salon: The Dogs Bullocks Mobile Dog Grooming (Cardiff centre), Cardiff Mobile Dog Groomer (Pontprennau), Animaltastic Dog Groomers & Pet Sitter and GGS Refreshing Paws Dog Grooming (Gabalfa). If you need someone to come to you outside these rounds, ask a salon-based groomer whether they also travel.

Cats and boundary businesses

K9 Creations in Llandaff North and Wags and Whiskers Pet Groomer in Penarth both groom cats alongside dogs; Paws Galore & Co in Penarth also runs a grooming academy, dog training and doggy day care from the same site. Missymoo's Dog Grooming sits just west of Newport's usual postcode core but is kept here as within the city, and Classic Canine Cuts Dog Grooming School sits in Blackwood, north of Caerphilly's own postcode core but within the same county borough.

Reviews

No rating is shown for any business in this directory. A small number of directory pages seen during research quoted star ratings for a couple of these businesses, but none came from a source this directory can independently verify and link to (Google, Trustpilot, Fresha, Booksy or Yelp), so none is shown here. Ask to see recent work or a reference when you call, rather than assuming a business has no reviews at all.

Where they are

Coverage is heaviest in Llanishen and Whitchurch (nine), followed by Penarth and Barry (five), Roath and Penylan (four), Ely and Fairwater and Caerphilly (three each), Canton and Grangetown and Newport (two each), with Cardiff centre and Cathays the thinnest at one confirmed groomer. If you're in a thinner area, the nearest well-documented option or a mobile groomer covering your postcode is worth trying first.
