How to choose a dog groomer in Canterbury
Dog grooming is unregulated in the UK, so the checking is on you. Canterbury's twenty-one listed groomers range from purpose-built salons and long-standing home studios with their own websites to Facebook-only businesses with little more than a name. Read this before you pick one.
Why this list is twenty-one, not thirty-one
Research for this directory found thirty-one dog grooming businesses across Canterbury and the surrounding villages. Ten aren't listed here. Eight had no phone number that could be confirmed anywhere we checked, including a well-documented salon with a full published price list, Just Groomed in Blean, whose own website gives no number at all. One, Ambrose Jones Dog Grooming Salon in Tankerton, is marked permanently closed on its own Facebook page, even though its address and phone still appear live on several directories. And one, Dog Store on Sun Street, is left out for the reason below.
A phone number shared by two unrelated businesses
Directories list an identical phone number, 01227 456195, for two different businesses: Dog Store, a city-centre address on Sun Street with no website of its own, and Dog Spa (trading as Dog Store & Spa Ltd), a purpose-built salon at Lakesview Business Park in Hersden, six miles away, whose own website confirms that number as its. Because the number is confirmed on Dog Spa's own site and not on any site of Dog Store's, this directory lists it under Dog Spa only. If you find "Dog Store" on Sun Street through a search engine or directory, be aware that the number attached to it very likely reaches the Hersden salon instead; call Dog Spa direct on the number listed here, or visit Sun Street in person to ask what's there now.
Two areas with nothing confirmed
Wincheap has no confirmed independent dog groomer at all: every search turned up only the Pets at Home Groom Room at Riverside Retail Park, a national in-store chain excluded from this directory on principle. Canterbury's own city centre, outside Wincheap, fares little better: all three businesses research found there are left out, for the reasons above, so nobody is listed in the centre itself. If you're in the middle of the city, the nearest confirmed groomers are in Sturry, Whitstable or Bridge, a short drive or bus ride away.
Qualifications
City & Guilds Level 3 comes up most often: Paws and Tiaras' Bea and Waggy Groomers' Beth both hold it with double distinction, and Alisiane Dog Grooming's Allison Shoosmith holds it with merits and distinctions after more than 30 years in the trade. IDogz World in Rough Common and Glory Dogs Grooming & Petcare's Ann Walker-Parry are also City & Guilds qualified, the latter also trained in pet first aid and behaviour. Bay Pawz Grooming Services and Pawsons Dog Grooming Salon & Spa both cite Level 3 qualifications plus canine first aid, and The Floof Spa's Joanne Taylor holds an SEG Level 3 accreditation. Ask for the qualification by name if it matters to you.
Mobile options
Only one confirmed business in this directory is mobile rather than salon or home-based: Doggies & Moggies, which visits homes across Whitstable, Herne Bay and Faversham for both dogs and cats. A handful of salons, including Kings Pet Services and The Floof Spa, offer collection or drop-off rather than a full home visit; ask when you book.
Cats as well as dogs
Four businesses in this directory are confirmed to groom cats alongside dogs: Glory Dogs Grooming & Petcare, Paws and Tiaras (whose owner Bea has more than 40 years of Maine Coon ownership and breeding experience), Affinity & Barking Beauties, and the mobile Doggies & Moggies. Ask first if you have a cat, since most listings here don't mention it either way.
Prices are rarely published
Only two of the twenty-one businesses in this directory publish a price list: Woof! Whitstable Dog Grooming (full groom from £50) and The Floof Spa in Herne Bay (full groom from £40). See the prices guide for the detail; everyone else quotes on enquiry, so ask before booking.
Reviews
No business in this directory has an independently checked, dated star rating from an outside platform like Google. Glory Dogs Grooming & Petcare shows a 5.0-star rating from 127 reviews sourced from its own website, and is separately confirmed as a ThreeBestRated top-three pick and a 2025 award winner; that's noted here as coming from the business's own site, not from an independent check. Two other businesses, Affinity & Barking Beauties (a 98% recommendation rate from 79 reviews) and Canine Style (a 100% recommendation rate from 43 reviews), quote self-reported Facebook figures that aren't shown as ratings here for the same reason. For everyone else, ask to see recent work or a reference rather than relying on a figure that isn't shown on this site.
