How to choose a dog groomer in Burnley, Nelson and Colne

A groomer opens the door of a small quiet grooming room to show an owner whose fawn Whippet stands calmly beside her

Dog grooming is unregulated in the UK, so the checking is on you. This directory covers twenty-three dog groomers across five areas: Burnley (BB10, BB11), Padiham & Great Harwood (BB6, BB12), Nelson & Brierfield (BB9), Colne & Barnoldswick (BB8, BB18) and Bacup (OL13). A number of BB12 addresses with a Burnley postal address are listed here under Padiham & Great Harwood rather than Burnley, because BB12 falls in that area's postcode district rather than Burnley's own BB10/BB11 range; check the postcode, not just the town name in the address, when looking for someone near you. Read this before you pick one.

Check how well the business is documented

Of the twenty-three businesses listed, one, Stainthwaite Dog Grooming, was confirmed from a first-hand working website with real detail (marked high confidence). Eight are medium confidence, usually meaning the details come from a directory listing cross-checked against a second source, or a business's own website with limited detail, rather than full independent confirmation. Fourteen are low confidence and say so plainly on their listing: research across this area relied on third-party directory pages rather than working websites or social pages for most businesses, so confirm what's on offer, current hours and prices by phone before booking any of these fourteen.

Same address, different name, or two premises under one name

Several listings here need a second look before you call. Wuff Cutz Dog Grooming, on Rainhall Road in Barnoldswick, shares its address and phone number with a business recorded elsewhere under the name Short Dog 'n' Sides Professional Grooming; which name is current couldn't be confirmed, so ask for the salon by address if the name doesn't match what you expected. The Poodle Parlour appears twice, on Holly Street in Burnley and on Hargrove Avenue in the Padiham & Great Harwood area, sharing one phone number between the two; this looks like one business with two premises. Doggie Style Grooming Parlour also appears twice, on a farm in Hapton (Burnley) and on Rosegrove Lane (Padiham & Great Harwood), but with different phone numbers, so these look like two separate, unrelated businesses trading under the same name rather than one operation. Woof & Tumble in Padiham also appears under the name Daisy's Dog Grooming at the same address and phone number on one directory; it's recorded once here, as Woof & Tumble.

Thin coverage in Colne & Barnoldswick and Bacup

Colne & Barnoldswick has only three confirmed groomers, and none is based in Colne town centre itself: Pedigroom is in Trawden on Colne's eastern edge, and Wuff Cutz Dog Grooming and Country Ways are both in the Barnoldswick/Earby part of the area. Bacup has only two: Stubbylee Borzois Grooming Service and Dial A Dog Wash. Both areas are treated as thin rather than fully covered; if you're in either, it's worth ringing round beyond this list, and a well-documented business in a neighbouring area may be worth a call too.

Qualifications

City & Guilds training is cited by a few businesses here: Stainthwaite Dog Grooming's Amee (Level 3), Rubydoo's Professional Pet Grooming, and Eds & Tails Mobile Dog Wash's groomer, trained through the All Breeds Grooming Academy. Claire Smith Dog Grooming also holds a City & Guilds professional grooming qualification. Ask for the qualification by name if it matters to you.

Mobile groomers and one-to-one setups

Three of the twenty-three businesses here work from a van rather than a fixed salon: Rubydoo's Professional Pet Grooming, covering Burnley; Eds & Tails Mobile Dog Wash, run by Erden and Robbi Atilgan since 2013 from a fitted-out van covering roughly a ten-mile radius around Nelson, as far as Barnoldswick and Rishton; and Dial A Dog Wash in Bacup. All three limit how many dogs they take in a day or work a set round, so book ahead. Stainthwaite Dog Grooming takes one-to-one appointments only from its Blacko premises, with free pick-up and drop-off within 15 miles.

Reviews

12 of the 22 groomers listed here show a Google rating, taken from the business's own Google profile and linked from the listing; the others have no rating from a source this directory can link to. Ask to see recent work, a reference, or photos of previous grooms instead of relying on a star rating you can't check yourself.

Where they are, and where they're thin

Coverage is heaviest in Burnley itself (seven), followed by Padiham & Great Harwood (six) and Nelson & Brierfield (five), then Colne & Barnoldswick (three) and Bacup (two), the two thinnest areas in this directory. If you're in one of the thinner areas, a well-documented business in a neighbouring area, or one of the three mobile groomers above, is worth trying alongside the local options.
