How to choose a dog groomer in Blackburn and Burnley

Dog grooming is unregulated in the UK, so the checking is on you. This directory covers thirty-four dog groomers across Blackburn town centre, Darwen, Accrington & Oswaldtwistle, Burnley, Nelson & Colne, Clitheroe & the Ribble Valley, Rossendale, and Padiham & Great Harwood, ranging from long-established salons to home-based, one-person operations found through a single online listing. Read this before you pick one.

Check how well the business is documented

Of the thirty-four businesses listed, seven were confirmed from a first-hand working website plus at least one other source (marked high confidence): Emma's Dog Grooming, The Doghouse, Tender Love and Fur, Stainthwaite Dog Grooming, Jago's Pet Boutique & Spa, Posh Paws Rossendale and Happy Dogs & Pets. Twenty-four are medium confidence, usually meaning the details come from an online listing, Facebook page or a single secondary source rather than the business's own working site; two of those, Turner & Pooch and Ribble Valley Groomers, had no confirmed phone number until one was found separately through a business-listing lookup. Three are low confidence and say so plainly on their listing: Danni's Diamond Dogs (Darwen), Harebell Professional Pet Grooming and No.9 Dog Emporium (both Haslingden).

Two flagged pairs, worth a closer look before you call

Two similarly named Darwen salons, Kellie's Dog Grooming on Union Street and Kellies' Groom Room on Bog Height Road, may or may not be connected; they have different addresses and phone numbers on every source checked. No confirmed phone number could be found anywhere for the Bog Height Road business, so only Kellie's Dog Grooming, on Union Street, appears in this directory; double-check the address when you call, since the names are easy to mix up. Separately, Harebell Professional Pet Grooming and No.9 Dog Emporium share an identical address, 301 Blackburn Road in Haslingden, under different trading names and phone numbers; this may mean one has succeeded the other at the same unit, or that two home-based traders share the building. Both are listed, each with its own confirmed phone number, but confirm by phone that the one you're calling is still trading at that address before visiting.

Thin coverage in two areas

Padiham & Great Harwood is the thinnest area in this directory, with only two confirmed groomers, Lexie's Dog Grooming in Padiham and Furstyle Dog Grooming in Great Harwood; a further research pass on these two towns specifically was cut short and would likely turn up more. Nelson & Colne is also thin in practice: all four confirmed businesses (The Green Groom Nelson, Eds & Tails Mobile Dog Wash, Claire Smith Dog Grooming and Stainthwaite Dog Grooming) sit in Nelson or the village of Blacko between the two towns, and no groomer based in Colne itself could be confirmed. If you're in either area, it's worth ringing round rather than assuming the list above is complete.

Who was left out, and why

Three businesses with a confirmed address had no phone number on any source checked and were excluded on that ground alone: Happy Hounds Pet Services (a mobile groomer based in Blackburn), Kellies' Groom Room (Darwen) and Bark & Bubbles (Oswaldtwistle). Two more had neither a confirmed address nor a phone number, only a Facebook page: HD Pet Styling (Blackburn) and Bratticus Dog Grooming, which appears to work from the groomer's own home in Darwen. Five Pets at Home Groom Room branches, in Blackburn, Accrington, Burnley, Clitheroe and Rawtenstall, were seen and excluded as national in-store chains rather than local independents. Two businesses with a confirmed address, Short Dog n Sides Professional Dog & Cat Grooming and Coyote Comb Club, both in Barnoldswick, were excluded because BB18 is a separate postcode district from the BB1 to BB12 range this directory covers. A marketing page for mobile collection into Darwen, run by a valeting-style business called Bathe & Bark, was also excluded: the business's real base is a salon in Preston, outside this area, with no genuine local premises in Darwen itself.

Qualifications

City & Guilds training comes up most often: Stainthwaite Dog Grooming's Amee (Level 3), Rubydoo's Professional Pet Grooming, Claire Smith Dog Grooming and Eds & Tails Mobile Dog Wash (via the All Breeds Grooming Academy) all cite City & Guilds certification. Ribble Valley Groomers' Kirsty trained through the Canine Groom School to City & Guilds Level 3 and has previously worked with the RSPCA, vets, stables and gundog trainers. Tender Love and Fur's Lizzy and Turner & Pooch are both trained in canine or pet first aid, and Minnie's Dog Grooming describes itself as fully insured and canine first aid qualified. Ask for the qualification by name if it matters to you.

One-to-one and home-based setups

A few businesses describe working with one dog at a time rather than a busy multi-dog salon floor: Tender Love and Fur, run from Lizzy's own home garden in Darwen with calming one-to-one appointments, and Stainthwaite Dog Grooming, which also takes one-to-one bookings only and offers free pick-up and drop-off within 15 miles. Divine Canines, in Accrington, and Kellie's Dog Grooming, in Darwen, are also described as home-based or salon-with-seating setups rather than large operations. If a calmer, single-appointment setting matters for an anxious or reactive dog, these are worth asking about directly.

Mobile groomers

Two of the thirty-four businesses here work from a van rather than a fixed salon: Rubydoo's Professional Pet Grooming, covering Burnley, and Eds & Tails Mobile Dog Wash, run by Erden and Robbi Atilgan since 2013 from a fitted-out van covering roughly a ten-mile radius around Nelson, as far as Barnoldswick and Rishton. Both limit how many dogs they take in a day, so book ahead. If you need someone to come to you outside these two rounds, ask a salon-based groomer whether they also travel.

Cats and other animals

Dog & Cat Grooming in Blackburn, Emma's Dog Grooming in Church, Turner & Pooch in Darwen and the mobile Rubydoo's Professional Pet Grooming in Burnley all confirm cat grooming alongside dogs. Everyone else in this directory is confirmed for dog grooming only.

Reviews

No business in this directory currently carries a rating from an independent, linkable source such as Google, Trustpilot, Fresha, Booksy or Yelp. A five-star, thirteen-review score shown for Dog & Cat Grooming on a general online listing, and a similar figure seen elsewhere during research, are not shown here for that reason. Ask to see recent work, a reference, or a Google Business page directly when you call, rather than assuming a business has no reviews at all simply because none appear on this site.

Where they are

Coverage is heaviest in Accrington & Oswaldtwistle (six confirmed businesses), followed by Darwen, Clitheroe & the Ribble Valley and Rossendale (five each), Burnley and Nelson & Colne (four each), Blackburn town centre (three), and Padiham & Great Harwood, the thinnest area, with two. If you're in one of the thinner areas, a well-documented business in a neighbouring area, or a mobile groomer who covers your postcode, is worth trying alongside the local options.
